I was sterilized whilst pregnant

I was sterilized in April this year. A pregnancy test was taken to rule out pregnancy on the morning of the operation. I was never told the result but pressumed it was negative as they went ahead with the opp. I was given fentanyl and codeine for the pain. Three weeks later I started feeling sickness send dizziness and found out I was pregnant. I went straight to the hospital as I was worried about ectopic, they done a scan and confirmed I was 7 weeks gestation, which means I was 4 weeks when they performed the operation. I am now 19 weeks pregnant and so worried about my anomaly scan as I know this will show if there is any damage to my baby from the anaesthetic or painkillers. This has been the most stressful time for me and cant be good for my unborn baby. Has anyone else been through this?

Golly, what a situation!

What did your 12 week scan show?

Bearandcub · 19/08/2013 12:11

Goodness you poor thing, I can entirely empathise with your stress. I hope the scan goes well and you get a clear indication of your child's health.

Gosh, poor you!

At 4 weeks pregnant, the test might not have showed up as postitive.

Also as I understand it, the baby is not fed via your body till 6 weeks anyway, so there should not be any effect of the anaesthetic or the painkillers on the baby. Everything will be fine.
Good luck with the scan.

The codeine should be fine - I was prescribed this during pregnancy as I'm allergic to paracetamol. No idea about the fentanyl but I agree with others that it should be fine. Good luck with the scan!

I am pretty sure it was fentanyl I was on when I had my emergency cerclage placed many years ago when I was 18 weeks. Codeine is also fine.

Hope all goes well!!

My friend had a gallbladder op when 4weeks pg. She went on to have a healthy baby boy.

My friend had her appendix out under GA and various painkillers at about 8 wks pg. Her son is a big, bright strapping 5 year old who has only ever seen a doctor when he has fallen off things.

Wow! What an amazing baby this will be, truly getting in to this world against the odds, and what a great story you will have to tell them!

Truly an Indiana Jones's hat of a baby! xxx
