How much weight gain??

I'm just curious as to how much weight women typically put on during pregnancy? Or does it vary?

I'm only little at 57kg (BMI was 20.7) and am trying to imagine a few extra stones on me and I just can't Grin

When my sister had her first baby she was probably a few kilograms heavier than what I am now and she ended up with an absolutely MASSIVE bump and her boobs just exploded. Thankfully she lost her weight after the birth and was soon back in her size 10 jeans, not sure whether this is because she breast fed for 10 months though.

I know weight gain is part and parcel but I'd like to be prepared for just how much weight gain is normal Smile

I was 57kgs and went upto 70kgs by the end of my pregnancy, however I live in France and was weighed every month. Any time id put on a little more than I should have I got tutted at!

I didnt eat for two and had an active job so I guess that helped me from exploding but at the same time I didnt say no to the odd slice of cake!

Try not worry too much and enjoy it :)

I think guidelines say around 2 stone, but think it varies on your starting point, e.g less if you are heavier. I don't think you need to worry too much about losing it as a lot goes when you give birth and shortly after as much as baby, water etc.

I wasn't exactly small before I got pregnant, I'm 28 weeks now and have put on just under a stone. No idea if that's too much or too little!

plentyofsoap · 14/08/2013 22:08

My bmi was just over 21 when I first got pregnant and i have put on just over a stone at 25 weeks. It seems to be all on my bump this time round.

BentleyBelly · 14/08/2013 22:19

I started at 58kg and at 38 weeks I am 73kg so I think thats nearly a 2 and a half stone gain? I've eaten whatever I want whenever I want and am not worried about gaining weight, you are supposed to. Enjoy your pregnancy and your food!

I'm 32 weeks and have put on a stone.

Friend put on 24 kgs during her pregnancy, I just cannot imagine it.

thegoldenfool · 15/08/2013 10:54

I was 60kg, lost 3 kg in the early days due to sickness and ended up 75kg Blush

this is like my first pregnancy which took some time for the tummy to go down(because of c-section?) but 4/5 months later, breast feeding, small exercise but an hour of walking everyday was back to normal(ish) - here´s hoping for the same again this time!

ch1134 · 15/08/2013 11:12

I started at around 55kg like you. I'm now 16 weeks, and my boobs and tummy have grown, and I've got fat around my waist, hips and thighs that wasn't there before. I was very active before this pregnancy, running a half marathon in April! So I thought I'd put on weight due to inactivity - being too tired to exercise at first, then that hot period of weather... Now I have energy, but am eating more.
I'm told the normal amount to put on is 1 and 1/2 - 2 and 1/2 stone, but most of it goes on after 20 weeks. My sister put on 4!
So I tentatively got on the scales for the first time yesterday... 55kg! No weight gained! I guess my muscle turned to fat!

BurbGirl2013 · 15/08/2013 11:19

Im 24 weeks normally just under 10 stone 5"7...so average/slimish size 10. Have shot up 1 & 1/2 stone but now trying to maintain this for a while and not put on more untill 30 wks+. All those carbs/cheese/ice cream for me so trying to reign it in!!

Dirtymistress · 15/08/2013 11:37

4 stone with my firstGrin but I was very thin to start with. Two and a half stone with my second, ending up at exactly same weight both times, just started at a fatter point with the second. Five months on and it's nearly all off and I am back to running miles and miles. Don't stress about it, it's only nine months if fatness. You have the rest of your life to be skinny if that's what you want.

Woodifer · 15/08/2013 11:39

burbgirl - sounds like i'm a similar starting size to you - I have put on about 3 stone (20kg) now at 39+5.

Think I put on a bit more last time - but had a bit more fluid retention.

Anyway last time - lost 2/3 of it almost instantly and more gradually lost most of the rest, prob lost the last half stone when i stopped breastfeeding (think my body wanted to maintain a reserve while I was feeding).

My take on it is that if you are used to eating to your appetite - and that being "right", then to try not to eat to your appetite will be really hard. People will vary as to how "hungry" pregnancy makes them (I know I always put weight on when I go on the pill for example). So I just ate to my hunger. I was lucky not to be sick - but did find I "had to" eat a lot in the first trimester to stave off nausea.

Woodifer · 15/08/2013 11:41

Yeah I agree with dirty mistress - if you are into your endurance sports (running / cycling etc) then you may find that you get a "training" effect form being pregnant - i.e. your heart and lungs get an extra work out carrying round the extra weigh/ blood volume - so you come back stronger than before (i def did with cycling).

Boosiehs · 15/08/2013 11:42

I've put on a stone at 39 weeks, but I was v overweight to start with! My face and boobs look normal, legs still far but bump is quite defined.

MrsMarigold · 15/08/2013 11:46

I was 60kg before DS and went up to 73kg, with DD went up to 72kg, and now DD is 11 months and I'm 56kg. I've done nothing to lose it just breastfed and the gap between my two children is 15 months so I was still carrying weight from the first pregnancy when I started the second. Nine months on, nine months off is my motto.

turkeyboots · 15/08/2013 11:51

I lost weight both times. Was 80kg and at term was still 80kg. I was over weight to begin with though and v v nauseaous throughout. Other people had cravings but I had replusions and ended up with a v limited diet.

Ls271082 · 15/08/2013 15:36

I started at 47.9kg am now 60.9 at 35 weeks so put on 2 stone with 5 weeks to go. Not gone mad with food but have been more relaxed than normally am. Hoping to lose it, feel shit about self x
