Pregnancy and alopecia areata

Just wondering if anyone else has experienced a worsening of the condition AA since becoming pregnant?

I have had stress AA since I was about 13 yo, where I would get a few 50p sized bald patches that fell out and regrew within a few months. However, as I've become pregnant I am now finding it falling out all over the place, with much larger and more noticeable areas of baldyness.

I am not so worried about its current state, which is about 10% of total hair loss, but more worried that it will become a full on slap-head once baby has been born.

Any advice/stories welcomed :)

Sorry to hear you're loosing your hair. I don't have any experience but I'm sure someone will post soon. SmileX

Karma - not sure if this is any help. I have no experience with or history or alopecia, however when I was pregnant with DS I lost a significant amount of hair for my entire second trimester. It was universal loss, so no patches but my hair was considerably thinner. I kept expecting my hairdresser and midwives to tell me it was normal. Only they didn't. Midwife actually referred me to a homeopath (made no difference). It stopped falling out in my third trimester but started again, for another 3 months, when DS was about 3 months old.

For me it thickened back out, but it was a shock (sorry if that sounds petty). I had had IVF and one of the possible causes was cited as a stress reaction as hair loss due to stress tends to occur several months after the stressful event.

Thank you :)

I usually get the patches showing 3-6 months after any stress, so I guess I'll just have to wait and see if my head remains hairy 3 months after birth.. Fingers crossed!

Hi there

I have had alopecia areata since I was about 13 years old aswell and have lost a couple of patches of hair since then but it always regrows.
I noticed a bald spot at around 28 weeks. Now it it has grown alot in the last month and im losing alot of hair in other areas as well. Im 36 weeks pregnant now and scared I will lose all my hair.
Did it continue to fall out after the baby was born?
How long for your hair started growing again and get back to normal?
