Can you see feet and hands poking tummy if you're not thin?!

Just that really, I'm a 14/16 and have a bit of tummy fat. I'm 26 weeks at the moment but when my little one gets bigger might I be able to see any body parts poking my tummy?! I'm worried you've got to have very little fat there and I can't see it going anywhere soon!

I was thin before pregnancy and not put huge amount on, at 31 weeks I cannot see anything!

bulletwithbutterflywings · 09/08/2013 22:24

I don't think its normal to see hands and feet whatever your size tbh!
Just random lumpy bits!

westergille · 09/08/2013 22:26

I never felt I could see hands or feet poking when I was pregnant - similar to you I was a 12/14 waist with tummy fat (loved how pregnancy smoothed it all out & I didn't need to pull my tummy in!!). I certainly felt the kicks and wriggles and could see my tummy rippling and pulsating (sounds lovely Grin), just could never say whether it was an arm or a leg moving.

JennaRainbow · 09/08/2013 22:27

I always thought it was normal, well according to my skinny mother-in-law anyway! I've also got an anterior placenta so assuming that doesn't help either in seeing anything, even lumpy bits!

I was kind of surprised too as the pregnancy books mention it quite often. I had an anterior placenta too but even so there's a lot of stuff between the baby and your tummy skin (fluid, womb etc) so a hand or foot outline would mean they were pressing pretty hard in one spot. Perhaps better not to hope for it Grin

Bunnylion · 09/08/2013 22:33

Don't think anyone sees more than just lumps and bumps moving.

Have a look on youtube, loads of heavily pregnant women have filmed their wriggly babies Smile

JennaRainbow · 09/08/2013 22:34

Haha good point! And yes, I love how when I'm standing or lying down my tummy looks smooth, sitting down on the other hand...

On the lookout for lumps and bumps then! Let's hope the fat doesn't get in the way too much!

I saw ripples and could sometimes tell where the very strong kicks were located because there was a bulge but couldn't see an outline of a hand/foot. I've got quite a nice video if my stomach going mad when I was close to term but it looks more like I've got snakes in there! I was a 14 pre pregnancy with a tummy.

northernlurker · 09/08/2013 22:36

I'm bigger than you and could certainly see what looked like the 'edge' of a foot etc.

bulletwithbutterflywings · 09/08/2013 22:37

The best bit is when you see the whole bump move when the baby turns around! Freaky but totally awesome!

MrGeresHamster · 09/08/2013 22:39

I'm bigger than you and towards the end there was a definite heel. DH saw it move across the top of my bump once. DS is nearly 1 and his heels still look like the heel bump.

Boosiehs · 09/08/2013 22:40

I've just got bum movements sideways across my bump now at 38 weeks. It's v strange!

RNJ3007 · 09/08/2013 22:48

I'm, shall we say, sizeable...

We can distinguish body parts by shape of bumps protruding. Often see feet at top right of my bump (slightly triangular bumps) and bum swinging (slightly squishy, oval shaped huge bump). Sometime elbows - belly button height, very pointy bumps!

Currently laying down and can point out how he is laying - bum slightly right of centre, back down my left side, shoulders just above my left hip bone, elbow smushing my belly button and an errant foot under my right ribs! And hiccuping...

JennaRainbow · 09/08/2013 22:48

Now I can't wait to start seeing movements not just feeling them. How many weeks were you all when you were able to see them better or turn around? So sweet MrGeres that you still recognize the heel!

Thank you RNJ3007, will know exactly what things are now! Feel better that I might see things now. Stupid mother in law making me worry...

No worries. I felt bump move at about 16w, DH first felt at 20w, visible about 24w. Now 37w (and 4st lighter than conception...) and bump is so clear to work out. Even my DM pointed out that she could tell bump had rolled over as my bump changed shape! (Btw, size 22 Pre-preg, now an 18 and not in maternity gear...)

JennaRainbow · 09/08/2013 23:26

Wow that's amazing! How did you do it? I've got SPD so can't exercise and am piling on the weight!

I was a size 8 when I had DS and only put on 10lb and never seen anything like that.

Fanjango · 09/08/2013 23:44

I had one experience other than lumps and bumps. I was a size 16 with dc1 and he got super frisky one day at work at about 6.5 months and I remember he shoved his foot so hard it hurt and I literally attempted to push it back in, the sods been pushing his luck ever since, now 13 Grin

RNJ3007 · 10/08/2013 08:37

I too have SPD (on crutches, physio and osteopath once a week).

And unfortunately, this rapid loss was due to Hyperemesis - I haven't had a vomit-free day in 2013 :( Lost a lot in my first pregnancy too, but didn't put it back on in the interim by eating sensibly and walking lots.

clabsyqueen · 10/08/2013 10:28

Since 36 weeks or so I have often felt full fists/feet/elbows/knees and am amazed that nothing at all is visible from the outside. Sorry!

purplemurple1 · 10/08/2013 13:32

I had a BMI of 27 before I got preg and have put on about 10kgs so far (36wks), and I can see his bum and have for a while when he wiggles around but no feet/hands but that could be beacuse of his postion as he has been head down and bum sticking out all the way through.

JennaRainbow · 10/08/2013 14:35

Thank you all so much for your replies, I can't wait to see things moving, although I think I can wait to possibly have to push bits back in!!

Sorry for my reply RNJ3007, I had no idea and it must have come across as so insensitive.
