My DH and i want to take a late honeymoon to the Maldives for a week. I will be 25/26 weeks when we go. I am nervous about being on an island and away from medical support. Has anyone been to the Maldives or a small island while pregnant? Any advice please? GrinXxx

This article might help. Do your homework and go to the biggest island possible. Check that it has a hospital with a maternity department. Does it have to be the Maldives?

You'll need a fit to fly certificate from MW or GP and check that your travel insurance covers you comprehensively for pregnancy-related issues.

I went to SILs wedding on a small Greek island at a similar stage to you which was reached by two boat rides and took ages to get to the main land. I'd think the Maldives would be better equipped but am not basing that on experience. My worst experience were the feral cats which came everytime we ate which made me feel sick and the lack of any loo seats which didn't help my SPD as I had to hover! Other than that , the plane journey was really uncomfortable and I was bloody hot. All the time. I personally wouldn't do it again but I'd bet the Maldives is nicer and if you want to, go for it! Take your green notes too.

Great, good info thanks. I'm really nervous about it. It doesn't have to be the Maldives but we wanted one last 'treat ourselves' holiday before children took over xxx

Hiya

We went to the Maldives on honeymoon last year. It was an incredible trip, the island (kuramathi) was amazing, really luxurious with food that I still think about nearly a year later!

However, I wasn't pregnant and I don't think I would feel as great about going back now that I am. There was a medical building but I'm not sure how they'd cope with a maternity emergency. Also, there was a lot of travel involved. Our island was fairly central on the map (not far from Male) but it was still a ten hour flight from heathrow then a change at Dubai for another 4hrs or so then a 45 minute seaplane or two hour boat ride to the island. I struggled a bit with the journey in general to be honest so I don't know how I'd have got on pregnant.

That said I've had a really rough pregnancy so it might be much easier otherwise. It honestly was the most wonderful holiday of my life so if you think you could manage the downsides I think you'd have an amazing time.

The Maldives is amazing! You'll be fine at that stage. My advice is to go to an island close to the main island. We went to kurumba ad loved it! it's a really small island (you can walk around it at the edge of the water in 10 minutes) At the time we went it had 7 restaurants and a couple of bars. It's a 10 minute speedboat ride away from the main island so you could get to the hospital fast if you needed to. Hope you decide to go! x

2 choices, either an island close to Male (so you can get to a hospital by speedboat) or an island that has its own seaplane (same reason, but only some of the more upper class resorts own their own seaplane). All islands have a qualified doctor on them for minor bits and bobs.
You will be fine, hospital is clean and modern, I would imagine the worst bit will be the long haul flight. I've been loads of times (albeit never while pregnant) and think its a lovely idea. V jealous!
