Chesty cough, is cough syrup safe?

I'm developing a nasty chesty cough. Does anyone know if I'm safe to take cough syrup? I'm currently 12+1.

Thanks ladies!

I had a horrendous cough when PG, the chemist just said all I could have was honey/lemon syrup, shouldn't have bothered, was crap. But that was with my first in 2007, maybe things have moved on?

Usually no. Ask your pharmacist at the dispenary what is available to you.

Hi JoniR

Benilyn Adult is a cough syrup that works by suppressing the cough and is safe according to my pharmacist last week. The active ingredient it Dextromethorphan. Google agrees it's safe.

Check with the pharmacist though - I'd completely avoid it if you can manage.

A pharmacist suggested I use Robitussin Chesty Cough Syrup when I was around 20 weeks pregnant.

Just popped down to see pharmasist, they told me to go to see GP. I've noticed that I'm getting short of breath so I really hope I don't have a chest infection. Sad

Sad poor you. Hope your GP is a bit more liberal than mine. He won't even give me loratadine for hayfever despite it being widely regarded as safe.

I asked a pharmacist about cough medicine today and she even peeled the labels off a few to read the detailed instructions but eventually wouldn't give me anything.

You can have Robitussin, and I think that is about all! I had the same, it was awful, andI did find that between drinking honey and lemon, Robitussin, lockets and a rub made of eucalyptus oil with a carrier oil put on my feet (?!) and chest at night did help. I was about 16 weeks then. Researched so much to make sure everything was safe. If it gets really bad, see your GP and see if they can offer any advice. I have found people such as GPs and pharmacists quite unhelpful when preggers, very risk averse, and they even said no to Lockets...but I did my own research and they are safe. People just say "ah, its your pregnancy immune system" as though that will make you feel better, but I was coughing so much I felt sick and it was so painful to cough.
