Worried friend

A friend of mine had a MC about 18 months ago, she was struggling to come to terms with it, and her GP prescribed her Zopiclone sleeping tablets. She didn't take them regularly as she was worried about getting reliant on them, just having one now and again when she felt the need.

The thing is, she's just found out she's about 5 weeks pregnant, and is worrying herself sick because she took a Zopiclone 2 weeks ago.

Has anyone else accidentally taken this during early pregnancy, or know if it may cause a problem?

Hi, I don't have personal experience but I am a Social Worker who work with families where there are prescribed and non-prescribed drug abuse.

She should not worry, as long as she does not take them any more and tell the MW there should be no reason to worry.

The Zopiclone will be out of the body within 48hour so likely that the egg had only just started to split when she took it.

I hope this helps?? Poor thing, I worried so much as I had take Codeine in the first few weeks of my pregnancy!! Totally flipped out!!

Just warm baths, warm water and relaxing massages for sleep now.

For the MC support, did she ever talk to someone about it?? Maybe it is time for some counselling? Talking Therapies are very very affective.

xx

Thank you for your reply. I've been telling her that at 3 weeks the placenta won't even be formed and the 'baby' will still be self-sufficient. Don't know how true this is?

Her GP and the staff at th hospital did give her details of helplines at the time of her MC, but I don't know if she ever called.

She told me she's thrown the rest of the pills down the toilet.

Yep, it is true, the placenta does not take over full until about 15 weeks and baby is self sufficient till about week 10.

Yea, probably better the fishes get the sleeping pills than her!!

It is all very confusing though, I am pregnant with my first and 14 weeks, I read everything and still get confused. I think I knew more before I was pregnant!

I hope she is ok, there are great information sites including WebMD, NHS, Bounty, Emma's Diary and What to expect.

Good luck to her, sounds like you are a good friend.
