Maternity clothes-smelly..?!

I'm sure people can smell me coming by the smell of my clothes. My two pairs of maternity jeans (from new look) have a horrible smell to them. Despite washing them numerous times the smell remains. I can smell it on my hands and skin when I have touched/worn them.

I haven't even got the crazy sensitive pregnant lady sense of smell going on.

I'm struggling so much with clothes so these are the only two pairs of vaguely comfortable trousers but they are so, so smelly!!

Can your family smell it? Try a bit of vanish and a day on the line in the sun and thunder storms the uv should get the smell out.

I know what you mean, a lot of jeans I have bought recently have had a funny smell that takes ages to wash out - sort of mothballs or chemical somehow. Must be either the dyeing process or something. How about hang them outside in the sun for as long as possible? It does go eventually, but it is unpleasant in the meantime.

I know the smell you are talking about! My new look jeans are the same.

My maternity clothes, mostly the trousers and jeans, smell like cheap clothes. I think it's polyester or Lycra or something. The smell doesn't wash out. They are also not ideal for hot weather, especially my 100% synthetic work trousers, and just generally get smelly faster than my normal clothes would.

Thanks all, you've made me feel slightly less crazy!

Wildstrawberry, it's exactly like a chemically manufacturing smell.

My under the bump trousers had the same smell which finally washed out but by that time they no longer fitted!!

Other people don't seem to be able to smell it quite as much as me (unless I make them sniff them, which is quite a regular occurrence!)

Thanks again.

I had a horrendous problem with New Look jeans not so long ago. Whatever I did with them they smelled of chemicals and a bit mushroomy. I had to throw them away and bought another pair and had the same issue.

I think it's just because of the cheap material, but they got worse the more I washed/wore them. It drove me nuts trying to figure out what the smell was and I'm still non the wiser.

I know what you mean about New Look jeans. Added to the nasty smell is the fact they DO NOT STAY UP - AAAAARGH! So they are crap for multiple reasons. And there was me thinking I had bagged a bargain...

I'm not pregnant and not wearing maternity clothes although I actually still could but yesterday I could smell an awful smell almost like a gas leak, I got really panicky but eventually tracked it down to my new jeans. They were from Tesco though. Horrible it was.

I gave my New Look jeans to the charity shop last week. They stopped fitting me at about 30 weeks! I haven't noticed the bad smell thing but I do generally hate all my maternity clothes (barely any of which now fit at 39 weeks) and can't wait to chuck them all out!

Scraggyspanner · 07/08/2013 17:03

Smitten - mushroomy is exactly the smell, and a bit like hot sweaty skin (rather than actually BO)

Posy, I hate all maternity clothes too, but unfortunately smelly new look trousers are marginally better than any others I've found.

I'm just about keeping my sanity with some maxi dresses!!
