I have my 20 week scan tomorrow and was just wondering if anyone's ever seen the sex of their baby at the scan?! :)

We never saw the sex but were told. TBH I think it's very hard to tell the sex to an untrained eye. It;s usually only the sonographer who is able to figure out which bits are bits iykwim!!

My friends dd was expecting and she went along with her for the scan. When I saw her I asked if they knew the sex, she replied " we didn't ask but there was no mistaking that it was a boy"..LOL when "She" was born 4 months later Grin..!!!

beware..!!! ASK..!!!!

shhhh · 11/06/2006 20:38

PS. Good luck for the scan. Relax and enjoy it.

SenoraPostrophe · 11/06/2006 20:38

yes, quite definitely this time. but then I wanted to know anyway.

Munz · 11/06/2006 20:39

yup, joey opened his legs and showed us all - no shame! lol.

lucykate · 11/06/2006 20:41

i did with both mine. dd's bits looked very much like a burger between 2 buns viewed from the side, ds was without a doubt a boy, his legs were apart and 2 bumps and a little todger were clearly visable. however, we had made it clear we wanted to know the sex, and the hospital in question will tell you if they can see, i know some hospitals won't. if it was so obvious, and you'd said you didn't want to know, the sonographer would make sure you wouldn't see anything.

squishy · 11/06/2006 20:51

OK, thanks, our hospital won't tell even if you do want to know, but we're both quite curious to have a look and see (but will also beware - have friend who was expecting no willy at birth but there was one :o)!

ds was proudly showing off his, what looked huge, bollocks!

Pruni · 11/06/2006 21:06

We both independently managed to see a penis at the 20-wk scan.
We had specifically asked not to know the sex so it was bloody annoying to be almost sure it was a boy but not quite sure enough.
Next time I am just going to ask!

tribpot · 11/06/2006 21:28

I definitely saw ds's miniature manhood at the 20 week scan (as did dh), the sonographer never asked whether we wanted to know or not - when I asked at the end she said "oh, I didn't look" (eh?) so did a quick squizz and announced "a boy. Probably".

PrettyCandles · 11/06/2006 21:39

Dh and I were both convinced (independantly) that we had seen, very clearly, a nice set of meat and two veg. For some reason the sonographer kept scanning that area up and down, so we got several repetitions of the same view, despite wrigglings. We didn't want to know the sex, so didn't ask her, and also didn't discuss what we'd seen with each other - just in case the other hadn't seen what we'd seen, IYSWIM.

So it was a total and utter shock to give birth to a girl!

shhhh · 11/06/2006 22:07

I still think it's hard for the untrained eye to tell..!! We had a 3d & 4d scan with dd at around 28 weeks and the sonographer showed us her bits. TBH I looked at the dvd sometimes a few times a day until dd was born and I still couldn't work out her "bits"..!!

Maddison · 11/06/2006 22:37

Yes, when I was 35 weeks pg with DS1 I had to have a scan and I'm sure I saw his boy bits!!

Tiny1 · 12/06/2006 15:37

Yes, we definately saw the boy bits in ours, even the midwife laughed but now not so sure as have since heard of a number of people who were told it was a boy but infact a girl. Apart from the umblicial cord what else can it be confused with?!

eenywifemum · 13/06/2006 16:26

I asked to see it and she pointed it out to me and DH - we had already been told we were having a boy but I really wanted to see for myself. He was dangling them with his legs spread... soo cute! And totally obvious as well! DH has since been very proud of the size! Grin

Azure · 13/06/2006 16:35

It's certainly not easy to tell and the professionals can get it wrong, but at DS2's 13 week scan (yes, that early) I thought I spotted boy bits and the sonographer confirmed that it was "almost certainly" a boy. It's interesting that most of the replies are from parents of boys - I guess it's easier too tell. Best of luck for tomorrow!

macneil · 31/07/2006 16:10

Hello, new poster here. We were told it looked like a girl today - 21 week scan - but she said it wasn't accurate, so we shouldn't count on it. How often are the professionals wrong? My mum, a nurse, says if the baby is in the wrong position, it can be impossible to see, but that she wouldn't have said if she hadn't seen something. Anyone know of the scan-person making a big mistake? Thanks.

(I am really happy it might be a girl! Easier to name...)

quootiepie · 31/07/2006 16:48

Just a quicky, I was told baby was a girl, then at a 30 week growth scan I asked if it still was a girl, and the scanner said no- its a boy! This hospital some time ago I was told was banned from telling people as they often got it wrong and people who had bought things looked to seek compensation. When I went back for another growth scan, I asked again the sex and was told they werent allowed to say anymore. If they say its a boy, its more believable, but be cautious when they say its a girl... willies are easily hidden!

Elibean · 31/07/2006 17:13

Yes, we saw three white lines with dd - girl. And again with this one (though this time it looked like just two white lines). Time will tell if it was right too - but the OB scanning me sounded dead sure.

Scoobydooooo · 31/07/2006 17:24

Did they give you a percentage? I was told i was having a girl & they were 80% sure but she said dont go buying pink & painting the nursery in pink, of course i never listened but i did start to panic towards the last few weeks thinking it was not a girl, but out she poped & we now have a beautiful 6 month girl goodluck x

macneil · 31/07/2006 19:14

They didn't give me a percentage. Will bear in mind that its willy may be playing hard to get!

Xena · 31/07/2006 19:18

with the ds's we ask and both was clear as anything. we asked with one of the dd's and I couldn't really make anything out.

MrsJohnCusack · 31/07/2006 19:21

nope, and I didn't want to know

HOWEVER, had a scan at about 32 weeks and saw quite clearly (to me) that she was a girl - this was confirmed for me by scanner who pointed out the kidneys to me, so I knew I was looking at the right things from the right angle!

LaDiDaDi · 31/07/2006 19:56

We could tell that there was no todger and the sonographer confirmed it. I had scanned myself at work on nights a week or two before (the benefits of working for the NHS are few and far between, you've got to take then when they come )so I was already pretty sure that it was a girl but I didn't tell dp I knew until the offical scan.

Xena · 31/07/2006 20:33

sorry but LaDiDaDi that is so funny imagining you scanning yourself on the sly

chopsolata · 31/07/2006 20:36

god yes, you could see ds at 13 weeks, much to dh's delight. I told the radiographer that if she could tell me at this stage then I wanted to know and she said 'my well theres no mistaking that is there'
