20 week scan

I have my 20 week scan on Thursday and was wondering if you need a full bladder for it? for the lady one the letter told me I did but this time it doesn't mention it. I don't wanna turn up with an empty bladder and be told to go away but I also don't want to pointlessly sit for hours with a full bladder if I don't need too.

Don't know the answer so I would recommend hedging your bets. Go with a full bladder, ask at reception when you get there and if you don't need it go for a wee! Or just call them and find out Grin
However sure somebody who knows will be along in a min

They told me i didnt need a full bladder for mine. Infact half way through mine the sonographer asked me to go and empty it :-)

You don't need to, I was asked to wee as my bladder was too full! Just take a bottle of water with you, chances are being 20 weeks pregnant you'll need a wee anyway!

ooh thankyou guys. all I seem to do recently is trundle up and downstairs to the loo.

I was told it is easier to see the cervix with a full bladder, which is one of the things they check? I went along full, and had to go 'empty' to give baby more room to wriggle as she was in a funny position, but they checked everything they needed to with full bladder first.

Best seen with a half full bladder at 20 weeks and the cervix can't be examined if the bladder is over full. Best not to worry about it, if you are not full enough they will ask you to drink and wait a bit and if you need to empty to make baby move then you can just do it.

TickTockTimesUp · 27/07/2013 10:54

I guess the easiest is to just make sure it's not full to bursting, but to have a drink with me while I wait then?

I tried ringing to ask, but the woman on the phone didn't really understand what I was asking Confused Wasn't a particularly hard question love... Hmm

It would have mentioned it in the letter if you had to have a full bladder. The receptionist you called might not know all the preps for every examination in the ultrasound and x-ray dept.

Hope you have a good time at the scan.
