Weight Gain

I realise this may sound silly, but when people talk about pre-preg weight and how much they've put on, are they talking about actual pre-preg or when you were first weighed at booking in (in my case at 8 weeks), which is presumably what the doctors take as pre-preg weight?
I'm a bit worried because having been quite sick in my first trimester, which appears to be now improved but still persistent at 20 weeks, I am 3/4 stone down on my actual pre-pregnancy weight and 1/4 stone down on my 8 week weight. I must be gaining weight, because I have quite a decent bump, but its as if I'm losing it from elsewhere at the same time. Is this normal? Will it harm my baby? Or should I just thank my lucky stars that the zillions of packets of crisps I consumed in the last few months instead of normal food have not yet sat on my hips?! Btw I am actually eating an almost normal diet now! This is my first so not sure what to expect (and slightly paranoid probably!)
Thanks all!
