I was induced at 38 weeks with a sweep in the morning and the pessary put in in the afternoon. I was holding my baby very early the next morning - established labour only 4 hours. No interventions, no tearing. A really positive experience.

When I had my sweep I was classed as 'favourable' though, already 2cm dilated although my cervix was still posterior. Basically, my body was ready to labour. It might be a bit of a longer process if you're not that far on.

The registrar did my sweep but a midwife doing it would also be able to tell you if you were effaced or dilated. They may also talk about something called a Bishop's score which is a measure of how ready your cervix is for labour. I wasn't given one but if you are ask them to explain it.
