Couldn't get a good enough view apparently (Fetal Heart Scan)

So I had my 20 week scan 2 weeks ago and everything went swimmingly except the consultant could get the right views of the heart he needed to see, so he told us to come back in 2 weeks which we did (this morning).

Again he couldn't get a good enough view. Now he has told us not to worry and this is simply routine but he;s referring us to St George's to have a Fetal Heart Scan this week as they have better equipment. He said the fact that I carry a bit of weight on my tummy could very well be restricting the view.

how am I not meant to worry? Has anyone else had this before?

I also have an anterior placenta so could that be getting in the way too.

I'm getting myself into a bit of a tizz over this I know but I just need some reasurrance really. Anyone?

No proper advice, but lots of experience of getting into god awful tizz's over scans - so (hugs).

I know this is obvious but try to relax. They want to dot the 'i's and cross the 't's on the form to say they've seen the heart and are taking extra steps to do it. That's all :)

You and baby'll be fine x

I totally understand where you're coming from! my bubs decided that it was going to lie on it's front with it's bum in the air for the 20 week scan and they couldn't get a view of the heart. they attempted the scan 3 times and it still wouldn't move so I had to go back again for another go. On the 4th attempt bubs co operated and we got the checks done and all was fine.

I also have some weight on my tum and an anterior placenta!

They are just making sure that they do all the checks in the best possible way. I'd be more worried if they just decided to carry on without completing them!

Please try and relax and enjoy getting another chance to see your LO, i'm sure everything will be fine

I had this too at our 20 week scan, we could see the heart but couldn't clearly make out all 4 chambers, only 3! The heartbeat sounded normal and clear. In the end the scan took well over an hour! The result was "see what your midwife says and she can organise extra scans if she feels it necessary", my next appoinment isn't until mid august! I'll be about 28weeks. I'm just hoping for the best.

It's good they're sending u for more scans, I'd feel a lot more reassured. I'm sure all will be fine x

This happened to us and we were asked back the following week and everything was fine. They genuinely couldn't get a great angle because the baby was in an awkward position (and I think I have an anterior placenta too). It's easy to say don't worry, but please don't. They just don't want to tell you all is fine until they've had a clear look. I'm now 28+2 and baby is kicking away like anything.

The sonographer struggled to get a good view with us with dd3 as well. We wandered round the hospital a bit and then she could see all she needed to. As it happened I wasn't worried at all because we'd been for a specialist cardiac scan the week before as dd2 has a heart defect. The specialist cardiac sonographr had had no bother at all seeing everything she needed to. I wouldn't worry OP. They do need to get a good view and the specialist equipment is better for that.

I had this - higher than acceptable BMI (can't remember what but I'm size 16) we had to go back at 23 weeks - everything was fine :-)

We had our 20 week scan last week, when I was actually 21 weeks. I'm carrying twins and they got all they needed for little boy but I have to go back for little girls head circumference, face and brain check - she is lying so low down they just couldn't get it after 3 attempts. I think she is always going to cause 'issues' on scans so to speak as on our 12 week scan I was scanned 4 times as she was so low down then too. This time they even tilted the bed so that my feet were in the air to see if gravity would help move her, I thought I was going to slip straight off head first haha. Although yes it can be worrying I try to look at the silver lining of the extra views of my babies I will be getting Grin
