I wouldn't worry about a 1cm variance tbh. It's not an accurate science! Your dates could be wrong, she could have measured you wrong...its a tape measure and human eye...try not to panic xxxx

Sorry im confused now!! I was told at around 36 weeks i should be measuring lower than 37cm on the chart thingy,my community midwife and consultant said this after examining me.im a first time mumSmile

You should measure roughly the same number of weeks as your gestation, so at 36 weeks it should be 36cm. However, because measurements can vary depending on position of the baby, human error etc they don't usually get at all concerned unless the difference is more than 2cm either way, so maybe they're being a bit over cautious in your case, which isn't necessarily bad but there's probably no need to worry!

My friend was recently measuring 50cm at 39 weeks and her baby was a bit under 10lb, so bit but not gigantic.

Me too hun, but your bump should.measure roughly 1cm for every week pg you are...36 weeks = 36cm so imo not a massive thing to worry about. I am a few days behind you (36 weeks on Sunday) and am bang on 36 cm according to mw check last week (34 weeks and 34cm). Not sure why they are making such a big deal out of it tbh. I would ring mw on Monday and ask her to explain, there may be another reason for their.concerns that they haven't expresses well

It's generally 1cm/week so you're only 1cm out. It may be a big baby, lots of fluid, just the way you're carrying or the midwife may have measured wrong. Try not to worry (easier said than done) and congratulations Thanks

Try not to worry, measurements can be very inexact. When I was measured at 34 weeks two midwives got three different readings between them - 36 weeks, which would have suggested a big baby, 35 and 33. On the basis of the 33 they referred me for a growth scan for a potentially low birth weight baby, but the hospital measured me dead on for my dates. So all a lot if worry for nothing! Don't worry!

purplemurple1 · 20/07/2013 07:43

I'm 33wks and measuring 3 to 4 weeks behind and no one seems in the slightest bit worried, and remeasuring by the same MW always gets a diff number. I am following the same growth line though maybe you've jumped a little which is why the MW mentioned it.

As the others have said it can vary so much depending on bb position (sticking out his bum can add a couple of cm to mine, at least), human error, fluid levels etc I really wouldn't worry too much esp at this stage wehre they are keeping an eye on you so closely any way.
