Had my appointment with the midwife today and Im only measuring at 34weeks so my midwife has arranged for me to get a growthscan tomorrow. Heartbeat seemed fine though however i am worried, has anyone had a growth scan before? Could it just turn out im carrying a small baby or could there be something more serious wrong?
My first born was 8pounds 2oz so I assumed this baby would be big too.

Hi,

I am 37 weeks pregnant with my first baby and had lots of growth scans due to a pre-existing kidney condition. They basically measure your babies head circumference, their tummy circumference and their femur length and plot it on an average chart. They can also predict the babies current weight and estimated birth weight (not sure how they do that but there must be some formula behind the measurements)! All I would say is that normally the bump measurements that the midwives do are not that much of an indication. For example I am measure bang on for my weeks but they have predicted a 10lb baby at birth!! So yours could be squished up in there or some other reason like less amniotic fluid which the midwife cant tell by feeling. Hopefully the scan will put your mind at ease.

I had 12 growth scans, I was measuring small, I then developed low levels of amniotic fluid so was scanned every other day. Despite all of these measurements baby came out 1 1/2 lb heavier than they expected!

Good luck.
