At 10 weeks, and with my morning sickness starting to settle down my body is getting into an unhelpful rhythm of diarrhoea and constipation Blush

Each time I am constipated it lasts for longer. I'm now getting quite uncomfortable.

I've tried drinking lots of water, eating dried fruit and fresh fruit, walking etc.

Any other tips? I can't take lactulose as I'm allergic to dairy.

Prune juice!

Chocomama1 · 14/07/2013 08:34

Oh and bran flakes. Helped me!

Crushed flax seed (not whole as they don't break down in your body), I put a couple of dessert spoons in yougurt, but sure it would work just as well on your cereal, in scambled eggs etc. It will take a couple of days to start working, so if you need something faster the chemist should be able to give you a stool softner (a laxitive fluid that goes up your bum) which will def get things moving and is safe to use when preg, just make sure you tell them as I assume your not showing yet.

Theres no end to the delights of pregnancy Smile

Thanks both. I drank lots and lots of warm water and then did the trick this morning.

I certainly need to change my diet a bit to stop it recurring. The flax seeds are a great idea, I've had them in porridge with raisins before so that would be a good breakfast. Now the ms is starting to subside, I should be able to eat more fruit again.

The glamour of pregnancy Grin I'm not allowed to complain as we've waited years to finally get pregnant, and to keep a baby this long Grin

I had very painful constipation when I was pregnant with ds and am coeliac and was prescribed Manevac by my gp, think they were granules that I took with water, but they worked really well

pebblepots · 14/07/2013 13:33

I ate a bowl of porridge religiously for breakfast when I was pregnant, to keep regular! the quick porridge you bung in the microwave

TheCatIsUpTheDuff · 14/07/2013 18:02

Prune juice is pretty good. Might be a good idea to see your GP though, there could be an alternative to Lactulose.

monikar · 14/07/2013 18:06

Have you tried fybogel? It is safe in pregnancy and is quite gentle. You can get it on prescription and you take a sachet in the morning and a sachet at night, every day. I took it and it is a bit unpleasant to drink down but it really does the trick.

EeyoreIsh · 14/07/2013 19:35

I'll try porridge this week, and then if that doesn't work I'll move onto the hard stuff like prune juice! Because I'm still suffering from ms, I'm not sure I'd manage fybogel...
