Can I have tonic water?

Going to a wedding today and want to drink tonic so people will assume its a g&t rather than trying to come up with some unbelievable excuse for not drinking! I have a vague memory that tonic is not allowed because of the quinine (sp?) in it but it's not listed as a no-no on the NHS site. Have I made this up!? Am I okay to drink it?

yes you can drink it. Pretend there's gin in it and you'll be fine.

Hi,
Found this on the net:
The amount of quinine in tonic water is less than 100mg per litre of tonic water.
The amount of quinine in a quinine tablet is about 300mg and the dose for malaria is 600mg three times a day (1800mg daily for a average adult)
It is in Pregnancy Category D because in high doses it has been shown to cause foetal abnormalities, however, in food substances (such as tonic water) it is generally recognised as safe.
Sounds fine, as the quinine is in such small quantities.
Enjoy the wedding, its such a beautiful day! x

Use the hot weather as an excuse for having the odd long drink as well, like lemon/soda water and lime.

Yup - I checked this with Midwife when I was early pregnant - its fine. :)

Enjoy the day! :D

oh good, I had a lovely gin and tonic yesterday, the last thing I need to be feeling bad about is the tonic!Haha

This might sound a bit odd, but I actually stopped drinking lime and tonic as a replacement tipple as I found myself waking up with what felt like a stinking hangover. Never remembered to check with the midwife but by Dad did mention that it might be the quinine.

Mind you, I had drunk as much tonic as my friends had drunk bitter (4-5 pints) so probably too much. And it could have been the lime that disagreed with me...

Just thought I'd share in case you have the same.e experience and then spend days feeling paranoid your drink has been spiked!

Ooooo I love tonic water with ice and slice! I think I pretty much survived on that and Chinese chips and gravy when I was carrying my ds1 :)
