Confused about whether to MLU

Hi ladies,

So I've got my 20 week scan this week and starting to think more about birth plan options.

Basically I have a choice of a hospital or MLU attached to the hospital - but they're 30 mins away (the drive there was the worst part for me with my last DS!) and I'm really not particularly keen on the hospital: it's scruffy, packed & not very friendly. It would also be a shared ward which bothers me as I have real issues with bf in public, even when not directly visible to others.

Or I have a MLU 5 mins away which I've looked around and love, with a high chance of being able to use the birth pool and a private room which DH and I can stay in as long as we like.

My heart tells me the MLU: I'm low risk, healthy, young and have had one birth on just gas and air so know my pain threshold.

My head is worried - what if something went wrong and I had to do a 30 min transfer??? Keep reading other people's comments and although loads of people are very positive about their MLU experiences, the majority ultimately needed to transfer either before, during or after the birth :s

Please advise and share your experiences - feeling really worried about whether I'd be making the right choice to go MLU

I have changed from a hosptial to MLU and did consider the whole transfer issue. The midwives really reassured me that they keep you fully informed if a transfer is likely.

She said from day 1 when people are booked in about 25% end up transferring to the hospital (some obviously whilst in labour).

I have decided to aim for the MLU but not be too dissapointed if I end up at the hospital!

Sounds to me like MLU would be a good choice given your history and location to it. I'd go for it!

MLU success here- did the whole thing at the MLU, and had a private room. It was superb and I highly highly highly recommend it if everything else is well. I'm going to the MLU at a new hospital this time so not sure how different it will be as too early for tour yet but I'm hopeful it will
be similar x
