80% Sure it's a GIRL!

I had my 20 week scan this morning (20+4) with my consultant.

It was very detailed and I was scanned for just over an hour. I asked if he could tell us what Gender the baby is and he announced that he was 80% sure it's a Girl.

We already have a 2yr old DS so we were delighted and also a bit shocked.

Now I know that they cannot be 100%, but if he wasn't sure he wouldn't have told us would he?

So what I want to know is, is it likely he is wrong? Is it common for them to get the Gender wrong? Can I go buy something pink?

Congratulations, I had a private scan at 16+6 and was told girl almost certainly and unless a willy popped up on my 20 week scan. If they also said girl it was 100%. I have two boys already and their scans were very obviously boy. I had my 20 week scan today also and was told girl from the go.

They can never be 100% sure until you give birth but I'm pretty confident I'm carrying a girl .

Having said that I know two people who were told girl and had a boy..... lol

AnythingNotEverything · 08/07/2013 17:15

If he said he was 80% sure, then I imagine he wasn't totally sure!

If you really need to know, I'd book a private scan to get another look.

SourSweets · 08/07/2013 17:20

No idea how true this is but my sonographer told me if it was a boy they could be pretty much 100% sure (if you see it then you see it) but if a girl they could only really give 70% accuracy because all the organs are on the inside and are more easily missed. So if yours said 80% that's a pretty confident statement I'd say. Congratulations!

StormBird · 08/07/2013 17:20

littlecloud It was definitely obvious I was having a boy the first time round too. I was so sure that it was another Boy this time that I'm in a daze even at the suggestion.

Anything I have another Scan in 2 weeks with the same consultant so hopefully he'll double check - I'll ask him to anyway.

I don't think they're allowed to say 100% because you might sue them if you kit out your nursery in pink and then it turns out to be a boy Wink
However, I got an 80% it's a girl and my little DD is 2 weeks old now. Word of warning though, in my last month of pregnancy I became literally OBSESSED with the fact that it might be wrong and that my lovely pink dresses and nursery would go to waste!!! So I'd recommend getting a private scan, going really neutral on the clothes etc, or keeping the tags on!!!

Hmm I had a private scan at 17 weeks and the sonographer said she was 100% sure our baby is a girl. Even we could see that she is clearly all girl! Did you get a good look?

5madthings · 09/07/2013 00:18

I was told 100% sure baby was a girl. Aftrr four boys we kept telling sonographer she must be wrong...in the end she said "look i am not supoosed to say i am 100% sure, but I AM 100% sure this baby is a girl"

We still paid for a private acan at 28wks where i saw for myself...girl.
.when she was born i said "is it alright?" "is it really a girl?" lol

I have a friend who waa tiold girl but it was a boy. So they can get it wrong tho.

Smellyanne · 10/07/2013 16:10

I was told the sonographer was 80 % sure our baby was a girl . DD is 3 weeks old now.

Lj8893 · 10/07/2013 16:29

My sonographer told me that she never ever says 100% even if she is 100% sure.
She told us it looks like a girl as there were no obvious boy bits, but to keep any receipts for any pink stuff we might buy!

It's unlikely for them to get it wrong if they say boy but can quite easily get mistaken for girls.

FourLittleDudes · 10/07/2013 16:32

I was told I was having a girl.... I had a boy Smile

rundontwalk · 10/07/2013 16:34

Lj8893-you just wrote almost word for word what I was about to!

For what its worth,my 'probable girl' is now 11weeks :)

BettyBi0 · 10/07/2013 18:14

Gosh I thought their gender guess was pretty much a sure thing at 20 weeks as long as they had a good clear view.

PleaseDoNotAdjustYourSet · 10/07/2013 18:18

They can't say 100% it's a girl, but I would say its pretty safe to assume it is a a girl. COngratulations, daughters are wonderful Smile

TheCatIsUpTheDuff · 11/07/2013 18:56

My sonographer said she'd never say she was more than 80% sure, but she could see no signs of it being a boy and was as sure as she could be that it was a girl.
The midwife said if she hadn't been very sure, the sonographer wouldn't have told us; she'd have said she couldn't tell.

ElleCloughie · 11/07/2013 21:41

I was told at my 20 week scan that they were 80% sure it was a girl. We had to go back as they couldn't get all the measurements, and at the second scan they said girl as well.

If she does turn out to be a boy, he will look a little silly in some of the clothes we've got, but luckily me and DH both dislike pink so not too much of that!
