Confused about what I saw on scan

I went for an early scan yesterday morning after an inconclusive one two weeks ago.
The sonographer found the baby! We saw the heartbeat as well.
However I've looked at my notes and it says 'viable pregnancy. Gestational sac containing a fetal pole with a positive fetal heartbeat'
I'm confused as to why there's no yolk sac, or have they just missed it out? Can you have a heartbeat and fetal pole with no yolk sac? And also can anyone tell me if the heartbeat means there's an embryo there?
Sorry just so confused by all this terminology!

Congratulations! They didn't use the word embryo because the baby is no longer an embryo, he/she is a fetus Smile

if theres a heartbeat, then the yolk sac would have gone i think. yolk sac is for super early. Heartbeat is 8 weeks +

I don't know about the rest, but viable pregnancy means that all looks as it should at the moment.

Thank you everyone! I guess I'm just over thinking things as when I went for my first early scan they couldn't see anything and thought it might be ectopic... Obviously it was just very early days! 2 weeks of worry finally over Smile

How far along are you?

Holly94 · 17/06/2013 07:51

She said she couldn't really tell as apparently early scans can be very inaccurate but she guessed around 6 weeks. I have a dating scan in 4 weeks.

Ah, so they've just not mentioned the yolk sac. Iirc it goes at about 8/9 weeks.

I think fetal pole is the bit that turns into the umbilical cord. Will have to Google and check that bit though :)

RobotElephant · 17/06/2013 07:59

Ok, I've got that completely wrong Blush
Not sure what it means but its not that

Bodicea · 17/06/2013 14:21

Fetal pole is just another term for fetus that sonographers use. Tend to use it in the early stages.
The yolk sac will have been there. Just some sonographers dont mention when see a fetal pole with heartbeat as they come in the order: gestation sac, yolk sac, fetal pole then heartbeat. So once see heartbeat can confirm it is viable x

Thank you Bodicea. I've been worrying about it ever since the inconclusive scan 2 weeks ago after I got an early scan after having bad pains. Spent the last 2 weeks convinced it was an ectopic or waiting for a miscarriage :( so seeing all that on the scan yesterday, including the heartbeat, was amazing.
