Bleeding at 5 weeks, should I worry?

Apologies in advance for the long post.

Until yesterday I thought I was a lot more pregnant than I am! Due to a v light period in May I thought I was 8 weeks and I am actually more like 5. Hence when I started bleeding yesterday morning, my doctors referred me for a scan at the Early Pregnancy Unit to check all was OK.

My doctor was really good and said it was probably nothing at all to worry about. She said, as she could see I was anxious, she would refer me to the clinic.

Personally I thought a bit of bleeding was normal (although this is more like a browny discharge) and I had dismissed the occasional pains as wind or my body settling in to become a mum. However, my partner insisted I go along.

When I got to the clinic and they did the scan, the sonographer said "I'm really sorry I can't see a baby", quite bluntly. Obviously, this worried me, but I knew I had not miscarried as all I had had was a few dots of brown blood. Literally hardly anything.

She recommended an internal scan and said that it looked like a 4-5 week pregnancy so they could not tell anything about the baby's health but that I was "bleeding quite heavily". I asked if this meant I would miscarry and she said she didn't know and would not be able to tell for another two weeks.

I just wish she had not told me about the bleeding at all (it is not coming out by the way!!) as now I am worrying. Has this happened to anyone else? Should I be preparing myself for a miscarriage?

This is the first time I have been pregnant, so would really appreciate the benefit of your experience.

Cheers, Moco

Hi M0co. I really haven't got any advice but I do not want to read and run.

Please have a hand to hold and try and relax a little x

Sadly there's no way of knowing at this stage. You can ask the dr to take bloods a few days apart to see if your HCG levels are still rising, which would be an indicator of a healthy pregnancy. When you said you thought that you were 8 weeks and are actually only 5, is that definite or is there a chance that the baby stopped growing at 5 weeks? Just seems a random amount of time for your dates to be wrong Sad

Thanks guys, it is killing me to wait. I am a right now kind of person! The 8 weeks and 4-5 weeks thing kind of works out but yes I guess that is also an option. I had such a light period I didn't count it and hence thought I was 8 weeks from my last 'proper' one. So 4 weeks would be from last pd and 8 weeks from last 'proper' pd. I am reading all sorts, from 'brown is healthy' to 'miscarriage'. As I say I just wish she had not mentioned that bleeding as it's making me think I will lose the baby.

Hi there M0co

I'm going through exactly the same as you as we speak and i'm stressed too. First pregnancy too. I'm around the 5 week mark. Let me know how you get on.

xx

You too HoneyPie, I think sometimes, they see first time mum and they think they can treat you however they like because we don't know any better! The internal scan was horrid I even had to ask her to turn the desk fan off that was blowing about all over the place on full speed!!! The worst was I couldn't take my partner as it happened in the middle of the day and he could not get out of work. Good luck, xxx

Hi M0co, sorry to hear you're going through this. As everyone always says its impossible to be certain of the outcome, you just never know in pregnancy. But I was in a similar situation to you last year in that I bled at around 5 weeks. My EPU don't scan until 6 weeks plus so I had to wait a week for an internal scan. It showed a developing pregnancy but also some blood clots in my uterus. They said that's where the blood was coming from but couldn't work out why. Anyway, to cut a long story short when I went back at 8 weeks the blood had gone and everything was fine. As they say, there are never any guarantees but I just wanted you to know it doesn't always mean the worst. Wishing you lots of luck x
