EPU visit

I had my first scan today at the EPU and I'm really confused. The reason for having the scan is that I got pregnant even though I have a coil fitted and they had to check if pregnancy is progressing normally, to see where the coil is and to make sure it is not ectopic. The good news there is s pregnancy visible and that it is not ectopic. it is very early days and they could not see s heartbeat yet but have another scan booked for Thursday.

Well that sounds like good news! What are you confused about? If you are around 6 weeks or less it is likely they cant pick up a heartbeat yet, hopefully you will see this on your next scan

Sorry posted too early.
The bad news is that the coil is still in place, next to baby Shock. And the confusing part? The midwife was not sure if they can get it out due to baby's position. I thought it had to come out? Every warning I read says that the earlier they remove it the better?

Ah ok, can see your confusion! I don't have experience of this I'm afraid, hopefully others will come along who might - but don't be afraid to call them and ask more questions, this is your pregnancy and baby and you should be made aware of all the facts etc. perhaps they will discuss it at your next scan?

I hope they'll discuss it at the next scan too. My GP will call me later to check how it went, I might ask her what she thinks about the coil staying in. Maybe the midwife was just saying her opinion and nothing is definite yet?

I know of 2 people who kept their coils in while pregnant, so it can be an option.

Hope all goes well at your next apptSmile

my GP called to check how my EPU visit went, and when I told her what the midwife mentioned she said that a consultant will probably make the see me after my next scan, and they should have more information then. Feel slightly more reassured (very slightly) and will try to relax until next Thursday.

valiumredhead did the people you know have any complications due to the coil?

does anyone know if I need to be more careful or if there is anything I can do to help little poppy seed stay put?

Not that I'm aware of,I suppose each case is different though. Good luck x
