Hi everyone,

Just curious really, how long did labour take with your first baby?

Cheers,

Libb xx

Twelve hours from waters breaking to baby popping out.

LIZS · 03/02/2004 18:59

20 hours

pie · 03/02/2004 19:01

36 hours

hana · 03/02/2004 19:05

nearly 2 days (in hospital on labour ward)

spacemonkey · 03/02/2004 19:09

2 days here as well

bobsmum · 03/02/2004 19:40

Um... Friday late afternoon (4pm ish) til Sunday 12 noon (emergency c-section). How long is that? Hang on...

Ok..44 hours of contractions (furthest apart 5 mins), but not officially in "established labour" for that length of time although it blimmin' well felt like it!! Midwife told me to go shopping on the Saturday with my Tens machine under my clothes - an attractive sight

eddm · 03/02/2004 19:40

9 hours but that was after a sweep ...

JeniN · 03/02/2004 19:46

I think official labour was 13 and a half hours but I had contractions every five mins (with a couple of hours respite once) for 3 and a half DAYS before that. Good question, I had no idea it would be so long. Good luck.

fft · 03/02/2004 19:50

aaah, in my case 3 hours which sounds fine, But I broke me waters first, then contractions from 15 mins to 10 then to 5 then bang on. As it was so fast I went into shock and a month early...!

zebra · 03/02/2004 20:15

How do you define the time boundaries? From 3cm to baby was 7+1/4 hours. From first ctx to baby was more like... 1.5 days?

popsycal · 03/02/2004 20:18

induced so a bit different
gel stuff applied at 9pm (watching 'friends'
waters broke at 2:00am and ds born at 5:45

but was 2cm dilated when induced...don't know whether this made a difference. also induction worked first time
4cm dilated when waters broke

emmatmg · 03/02/2004 20:25

About 30 hours from the first tiny twinge. However when I arrived at hosp 24 hours after that twinge I wasn't even 2cm dilated so not in established labour according to the MW.

I could have quite easily punch her in the face when she said that as I was convinced I'd be at least 8cm. I'd been in up all night in agony so was gutted to have nothing to show for it, IYKWIM. Thankfully it was all over within 6 hours (and an epidural) and I definatley had something to show for it then......he's asleep upstairs with his little brothers

Hulababy · 03/02/2004 20:26

No real labour for me. I was induced but it didn't really work. By 3rd day I got to 2cm dilated - but lots of painful induction pains. Ended up not going any further from there and had c-section that night.

fft · 03/02/2004 20:27

Dear Libb I am assuming that your asking because your due? I read maybe two books one with pictures. I did a birth plan expecting to have really bad back pains for a long period then me waters break then the birth. Instead went to the loo me waters broke went to hospital and was monitored. One minute I was 2 cm dilated then 5, pain more intense midwife says I'll be there all day, then I have an urge to go to the loo and ddi was crowning, I was in such a state that I just foget me breathing excersises...

bluebear · 03/02/2004 20:29

72 hours from 1st 'ouchy' contraction..... 24 hours from waters breaking/hospital arrival/2.5cm....but that was because it was an emergency section (after 4 hours at 10cm and no progress)

Linnet · 03/02/2004 23:01

I was 4 days overdue when they gave me a sweep and I was 2cms dialated at this point, I didn't actually know what a sweep was at the time but I do now. Was told I'd probably deliver within 24-48 hours. Then followed 4 days of crampy niggly pains. Waters broke, went to hospital they said I was 3-4 cms and could stay in. ctx were never very regular and dd was finally born 22 hours later.

popsycal · 03/02/2004 23:06

I suppose you could say i had a very short one then!
i was told by the midwife to get to the hospital early next time round!

EmmaKB · 03/02/2004 23:19

Induced at 3pm. Contractions started at 8pm, labour lasted 35 hours. Epidural probaby slowed things down a bit.

lydialemon · 03/02/2004 23:32

Contractions started at 1.30am, was in established labour about 7.30am and had DS at 6.32pm. He was the longest of the lot.

bobthebaby · 04/02/2004 00:50

From waters breaking to baby in my hand 14 hours. In any sort of pain - 8 hours. This sounds pretty good having seen the others.

Lilismum · 04/02/2004 08:08

I had my first contraction at 8am and my dd was born at 2.35pm, so really only 61/2 hours in total which was excellent although by the time I got to the hospital there wasn't enough time for me to get any drugs and i was pretty shocked that it was all happening so fast.

littlerach · 04/02/2004 08:13

First contractions 5.30pm on Mon, but I thought they were BH, as was 5 wks early!! By Tues afternoon they were regular and painful, I was still in denial. Has a show at 6pm, went to labour ward and was 2cm at 7pm. DH went home to get a bag for me, returned at 8.30 to find me being wheeled off to delivery room, fully dilated . Waters broken by mw, DD born at 11.15pm. Quick enough once I realised what was happening!!

motherinferior · 04/02/2004 08:16

Two and a half days? Spent a day with escalating Braxton Hicks, thought they couldn't possibly be labour as you're supposed to be able to tell, decided they were, spent another day with definitely escalating levels of pain, went to hospital when I couldn't concentrate on Buffy any longer, got there 9pmish, had epidural although only 5cm, labour stopped and was re-started, got to pushing stage the next day at around 11am, then all hell broke loose because she was in distress, babe ventoused out at 12.12.

Bozza · 04/02/2004 09:46

9.25 hours. Woke at 2.45am with pains (strong period pains). Managed to cope using TENS machine without alerting/waking DH until 5 am. 7 .30 rang hospital who said wait. 8.15 rang hospital and said I was coming in. Arrived 9 am. Examined 9.45 am - 9 cm. Started pushing (with gas and air) 10 am. Waters broke 10.30 am. DS born 12.01 pm. (Not bad becasue DS was 9lb 10oz).

WideWebWitch · 04/02/2004 09:48
