Hi Guys,

So, it's the 20 week scan tomorrow (At Harris Birthright, Kings) and I'm a bit nervy!

Just wondering if you lovely ladies who had already had it had any advice? It would be great to hear some 20 week scan stories :-)

I think it is always nerve-wrecking....but it is also wonderful to see your baby a bit more developed once you know everything is (hopefully) ok.

Take money for the scan pic. It is £6 in my local East London hosp.

Enjoy seeing your baby on screen.

Are you going to ask about gender?

CornishFirstTimer22 · 12/06/2013 12:15

Yep I'm going to see if baby lets us see! I was 50/50 about finding out but OH wants to know :-)

I had mine last week at 22 weeks (they do it a little later in my hosp) and felt quite nervous beforehand - hubby thought I was mad!

I dont think other halves can understand the pressure of being the only one responsible for the baby's development while in the womb.

Try not to worry, the likelihood is that all we be fine. And most of all try to enjoy seeing your baby, we only get these brief opportunities to before they are actually born and its so amazing to see how much they've grown since the 12 week scan.

Your bladder doesn't have to be as full as it does for your 12 week scan. Wish I'd been told this before my 20 week scan!!

I wish I'd found out the sex of baby at the 20 week scan - we changed our minds about wanting to know by 28 weeks so forked out for a private scan.

Mrs Margo - £6 for a scan pic?!

MrsMargoLeadbetter · 12/06/2013 12:30

Cornish ahh. What do you think it is?

I cried when I was told it was a DD, as we have a DS and I was really pleased it was a DD (and seemingly healthy obv).

Like others have said the probability is that everything is fine. The sonographer asked me why I seemed so nervous. I am sure they see 000/0000s of normal healthy babies via scan each month.

WeeS - yes, a bargain!

CornishFirstTimer22 · 12/06/2013 12:36

I really don't know what I think! I've studied the scan pic from 12 weeks but that doesn't give me a any clues! It has a high heart rate, 167 bpm and 160 bpm last check, and I've have sweet cravings which some say could mean girl, but I have a feeling it's a boy...

I would quite like a girl, OH would love a boy, so either way really :-) as long as healthy :-)

I have mine tomorrow too and this is the first one where I have it at my local hospital and not kings even though I had a scan at 16 weeks I am still nervous think its just natural, go with your feeling I would say as I was convinced that this was a boy after already having one of each and I have to have it confirmed tomorrow but its a boy :) good luck xx

MrsMargoLeadbetter · 12/06/2013 12:41

Cornish well by the end of tomorrow you'll hopefully know!

We think we saw a willy on DS's scan pic at 12 weeks, but not sure if that is just seeing things. The sonographer asked us if we wanted to know (which we didn't first time) at the 20 week scan but she said it is such a definite way we thought it might be a boy as it is easier to see "evidence" that it is a boy etc.

Do update us!

Sleepthief · 12/06/2013 13:03

Take a good book because you are pretty much guaranteed a long wait at Kings! I've had countless scans there (DS2 and 3, with extra scans), and have never been charged for pictures. It may have changed though... Good luck x

I had my 20 week scan on Monday and baby was being stubborn and naughty and wouldn't let the sonographer get all the right measurements and checks so we have to go back in 2 weeks for another try! Apparently its quite common, so be prepared for that to happen!

I was so excited to find out the gender and now have to wait even longer!!

CornishFirstTimer22 · 12/06/2013 14:23

Oh God! I hope that doesn't happen :-) It may do though as baby was being a little bugger at 12 week scan and they struggled to get all the measurements as it wouldn't stay still!! On the plus side, another scan must be quite nice.

I had mine on Monday. Requested not to find out the sex- don't think it makes any difference for the first baby. Loved seeing baby wriggling about, and all the detail- the chambers of the heart, the nostrils.... amazing.

Was disappointed with the pics though, so a bit stupidly came out feeling a bit deflated. We asked for 2, as both me and DH were going into work after and wanted to show off our baby pic, paid £12, and were just really disappointed with the pictures. 2 of the same, and all you could see was jaw and spine.- If it's possible, ask the sonographer to show you the screen pic before she prints it- especially if yours are as expensive as ours!!

WeeS · 13/06/2013 12:28

MrsMargo The hospital we go to have a small poster in the waiting area suggesting a donation of £1, but we've never seen a donation box nor have we been asked for money & have been given countless pics! ... We do live in Scotland however.

I remember being disappointed by the 20 week scan pics but then baby was being shy & curling up. Amazing to see it all on screen though Smile

OP let us know how it went! Smile

CornishFirstTimer22 · 13/06/2013 17:15

Well... I had the scan this morning, got seen bang on time which was nice.

Everything was perfect and it's a little BOY!!! OH is over the moon, and I'm very happy too!

Found out today as well that at Kings they do a 32 week scan as well... which I thought was odd, but they said it's standard there?!

Oh well, another chance to see my little man :-)

Ahh congrats OP! I have a DS and he is so much fun.

Think NHS is considering introducing 32 wk scans as the norm, so Kings are ahead of the game.

Lovely news for Thurs pm!
