16 week appointment

I was just wondering if the midwife would use Doppler to listen to heartbeat at this appointment. I'd like to take DP if she does, but of it's regular check up thing then I wouldn't bother... I'll actually be 17+3.

Thanks!

I had mine yesterday, I am 17+1.
The MW did listen with the doppler, which was lovely, but I wasn't expecting it and DH was in the waiting room!

Fairydogmother · 11/06/2013 17:14

Not all clinics will use the Doppler then so maybe call them first and ask?

Also bear in mind that its not always possible to hear the hb so don't panic if that happens!

AnythingNotEverything · 11/06/2013 17:18

The mw did at mine. She also took what felt like an armful of blood!

As per the pp, it can be tricky at this stage so don't be worried if he/she can't find it.

Is taking blood normal at 16 week appointments? I haven't had any taken since I was about 8 weeks, I think?

lilstar · 11/06/2013 17:31

I have my 16wk apt tomorrow and am wondering the same thing. My DP isn't coming tomorrow but I'm gonna ask if she minds if I record it for him if she uses the doppler. Might be a big fat no, but if you don't ask you don't get I figure.

FoofFighter · 11/06/2013 17:55

Most won't offer it as it's till hit and miss at this stage although on request and with the proviso that it might not be found and that you aren't to panic, most will :)

I had my 16w appt on my OH's bday so I asked and we heard it :)

TinkyPeet · 11/06/2013 18:32

Depends entirely on our midwife, if they do listen in and manage to find it, I'm sure she won't mind you recording a few seconds for your oh x

CuteLittleToes · 11/06/2013 18:38

Thanks ladies, I'll call the midwife tomorrow and ask :)

I have a very old and experienced mw and she found heartbeat straight away. Just lovely.

roofio87 · 11/06/2013 20:38

my mw did at 16 week app and even got me to hold doppler while she fished about in my handbag insisting I recorded it for dp, but then my mw is a bit batty!Smile

Alexandra6 · 11/06/2013 20:40

I had mine today and they told me they didn't want to listen with the doppler as it was hard to find sometimes so they prefer not to as that would panic me. I didn't insist as DH wasn't there anyway so I thought I'll just wait until our 20 week scan and midwife app when he'll be there too. Hope baby is ok in there! And hopefully I'll feel some proper kicks in the next 2/3 weeks to reassure me!

AnythingNotEverything · 11/06/2013 21:06

Oh hang on, it was 12 weeks when I had blood taken - I got my results at my 16 week appointment.

Such baby brain ...

TheCatIsUpTheDuff · 12/06/2013 09:44

my midwife did, and we found it, but she warned me first that the official advice is that they shouldnt, because it cant be reliably found at that stage and people get upset if it cant be found.

notsoold · 12/06/2013 09:55

My mw didn't look for a hb and I was a bit disappointed....but is their policy .
I have bloods taken every appointment. So at booking, 12 and 16 weeks.

knittingirl · 12/06/2013 11:49

My midwife didn't use the doppler until my 28 week appointment, so I think policy varies depending on where you are. They wait because it can be distressing if they can't find it because baby is small/hiding.

Also, I've only had blood taken at my booking in appt (about 7 weeks) and at my 28 week appointment, so looks like that's something else that varies region to region as well.

AhoyAhoy · 12/06/2013 19:13

My midwife used Doppler at 16 wk appt. I am 20+1 and I would say that hearing the heartbeat for the first time was the best bit of the whole journey so far.

The little kicks that I have started feeling are also wonderful, but have come on so gradually, from flutters to definitely recognisable, that they didn't have the same effect as hearing the heartbeat for the first time. That sound actually bought a tear to my usually very cynical, heart of stone eyes.
