Im 11 weeks pg with DC2.... I feel nauseaous all the time and can't keep anything down. I've only been able to take about 4 folic acid tablets since I found out I was pg 3 weeks ago. I feel really guilty and worries. Will everything be ok? Never had sickness with DS 1 so it's all new....

Please don't worry about that. People find out they're pregnant at atleast 10 weeks sometimes and won't have been taking folic acid. You should go see your doctor if you can't keep anything down so you can get something to help. Also are you trying to take the big pregnancy vitamins with FA in them or just the tiny FA tabs?

The main reason for taking folic acid in pregnancy is to lower the risk of neural tube defects. Neural tube development is complete by about 28 days after conception, therefore it's a bit late to worry about it now. This is why all women of childbearing age should take folic acid regardless of whether they intend to conceive or not.

This was me a few weeks ago. I just wasn't able to take the folic acid either but really if you always had a good diet before pregnancy then I really don't think there's much to worry about. I'm now 15 weeks and my scan was all fine, I was more worried about dehydration. If the sickness is there it's there there's not much you can do if nothing stays down. If you are normally healthy there is very rarely a problem from it x

You should make sure you are not dehydrated - you can get ketostix from the chemist to check your ketones.

Ah! I read somewhere (and friends have confirmed) that if you are sick after taking FA sometimes it is your bodies way of saying you don't need it. If you have a diet high in it it could actually be your body sees it doesn't need any more and is rejecting it.
I wonder if you could get a blood test though? Anyone know if they can check for FA levels?

Please don't worry op. I'm on my second hyperemesis pregnancy. With dd I didn't take one tablet and she's fine, I was worse with this pg and have managed about 4 tablets. I'm now 22 weeks and all is well with bean.

Don't bet yourself up, it's not your fault.

Reebok · 09/06/2013 23:29

I wouldn't worry. I was unable to take folic acid due to HG. I'm now 34 weeks and baby is fine!

babyhmummy01 · 09/06/2013 23:36

I never took.it either due to hg. The tablets made the vommiting worse. Don't stress as it makes the sickness worse

I'm also expecting DC2 and can't keep the folic acid down either. Just do your best. I tried crushing it up but it didn't work. I had hyperemesis with DS, took almost no FA, and he is fine. If you eat well anyway, and did before pregnancy, you should have good stores.

Thanks sp much everyone! I was taking well woman multivitamin tabs whilst we were trying to conceive so that was at least 6 months before I got pg. I hope it was enough.both GP and midwife asked about the folic acid and I felt awful when I said I wasn't taking any. I've been prescribed metoclopramide but it doesn't work. So sick and miserable......

Ask them for prochlorprazine it was the only thing that eased mine, metochlopramide was fab when they stabbed me with it in hospital but the pills were shit...mainly cos they didn't stay down
