First thing you bought and how far along were you?

I was at a dinner party last night and a mum who was there scoffed and laughed at my partner and I when we said we were going to wait until a couple of months before due date to stock up on things like baby wipes, nappies etc. We are both first timers so felt maybe we were being naive or something. I'm a bit superstitious ( crazy and not typically, I know!) about stock piling baby things too early. She said we should start buying things now ( I'm 14 weeks) and although I'm excited to buy, still think its a bit early.

We will be decorating the nursery at about 30 weeks I think. DPs dad is a builder/decorator and can get it done fairly quick. We will prob get cot bed and furniture sorted at this point just so its done.

Wondered what the first 'little' bits you got for baby were, how far along you were? Thanks.

i am just 22 weeks -bought a couple of babygros at the weekend. and that wa only because they were in the superarket as we went past!

no plans to go crazy buying stuff for a while yet.

no shame in being superstitious, especially if you have had a difficult or high risk pregnancy.

Purplemonster · 04/06/2013 11:49

I didn't buy anything until well after the 20 week scan and the first things we bought were a few second hand clothes and then a second hand travel system. I'm still only just getting around to purchasing some of the big stuff like a cot now and I'm 36 weeks. There's plenty of time.

SeriousStuff · 04/06/2013 11:54

Bought a few bits at around 14 weeks and nothing since then! I'm now 21 weeks and was thinking of waiting another 5-6 weeks before I try and finish off my shopping list.

You do it when you feel ready. I didn't want to buy anything before the 12 week scan, and now my 20 week scan is due on Thursday I'm still a bit reluctant to buy too much.

The benefit with spreading it out over a few months though is you can spread the cost. We will buy a pram next month and a cot the following month.

Ahh good I thought I'd missed something with the way she laughed at us! We kind of joked that with it being a Christmas baby we were hoping to cash in off Santa...maybe she took us literally and thinks we are mad!

I bought a pack of sleep suits and a little hat after the 20 week scan, just because I'd been itching to buy something. We got the travel system and cot around 6 months and a few bits and pieces every week after that.

MisselthwaiteManor · 04/06/2013 12:01

As for nappies and wipes and things like that I've just been adding a pack to the weekly shop so we build a stockpile without having to really notice how much it costs!

Dolallytats · 04/06/2013 12:06

I bought a little stuffed rabbit when I was around 12 weeks (after the scan). Then, after the 20 week scan I started buying the big things and other bits. I needed to spread the cost so had to start relatively early.

I am now 33+1 and have everything (or would do if Argos would please deliver my cot mobile!!)-think I went a little OTT with the clothes as I think she has more little dresses than she can wear!! I also have several packets of nappies (thanks to mum!!), wipes and things for my hospital bag like maternity pads, breast pads etc.

Now just doing a countdown!!

Steffanoid · 04/06/2013 12:08

I bought a pack of baby grows after the 12 week but then didn't really start till 20 weeks, I bought things like bottles when there was a baby thing at the supermarket, bought nappies and wipes when on offer, family have been picking up bits and pieces when they're out as well as us, just chucking something in the trolley when you're at the shop as a pp said you dont notice it, although im not paying more than 75p for a pack of wipes, have done this since about 30 weeks with wipes ans nappies, got a great deal at a discount shop, box of 10 huggies wipes for 7 quid! just cause tge box was bashed!!

Gonnabmummy · 04/06/2013 12:10

Got two sets of baby grows after 12 weeks scan as a treat and something to look at get excited then we hadn't really bought anything, we've had loads of stuff just appear 28 week now and got most things Butkus our first and it'll be both our parents' first grandchild so things keep getting sent to us :)

hartmel · 04/06/2013 12:25

I'm 26 weeks now, and our nursery is complete. Just have to stock up on nappies ( but I have enough for the beginning, as I want to see which one my baby likes and can handle) wipes, socks, bath essentials and diaper bag, oh and a quilt for the cot.

As I'm on sick leave since 19 weeks pregnant, and we are moving out of our house end of this month. We didn't want to wait to late to go shopping. Grocery shopping is already a big problem for me, so shopping for nursery would be even worse.
We also bought stuff when they were on sale or store closure.

In my opinion start buying now and spread over next weeks, as it is very very expensive. We calculated how much we spend already, if we would have bought everything a month before the baby is due, we would barely made it financial wise..

neversleepagain · 04/06/2013 12:34

I bought a hat and mittens in a Mothercare sale (winter baby), I was only 6 weeks. We had everything bought by 32 weeks, I went into labour at 34 weeks.

ChimeForChange · 04/06/2013 12:39

We bought one neutral coloured outfit after the 12 week scan

Didn't buy anything else until the 20 week scan, and everything else gradually from there

janey1234 · 04/06/2013 12:43

Didn't buy a thing until after 20 week scan, and then I only bought a teddy bear
Had a buying spree at around 25 weeks. Am almost done now, at 35 weeks. No rush I think.

igirisu · 04/06/2013 12:45

I got some pregnancy vitamins and a book on pregnancy at 5 weeks, i started buying little teddies and unisex baby gros at about 8 weeks. nursery was completely finished by week 25. I think its a combination of me being completely impatient and desperate to waste money that lead to me buying things so early. I think by 35 weeks everything was ready for him to arrive and now hes not here i'm twiddling my thumbs and flapping around in the nursery with nothing to do!

MrsLianeB · 04/06/2013 13:30

I had bought stuff when I reached 12 weeks with my first pregnancy which was a mmc. I put the stuff away and then had 3 further mc so after I had reached 14/15 weeks this time I got out what I already had and made a list of what I needed. Since then I have bought stuff off the list every month with our wages- if money is no problem then I suppose you can wait till near the end but remember some things may need to be ordered well in advance and babies do come early so get essentials first!

sjuperyoni · 04/06/2013 13:34

Dd1 - pack of dummies at 13 weeks ish in with my weekly shop. Little and cheap but felt huge to me kind of realising i truly was about to become a mum.

Ds - 3 pack of white vests and 3 pack of white babygrows plus a white blanket, also around 13 weeks in with my weekly shop..

Dd2 - bouncer and playmat around 10 weeks, kiddicare had a great sale on and they were 'last stock' and i really really wanted them.

For dd2 i had almost everything by 16 weeks except clothes, pram and cot mattress, i have them now and still have ten weeks to go Blush but We are moving to a larger house in 4 weeks so need money for carpets blinds etc so i'm very very glad i bought early!

Fairydogmother · 04/06/2013 13:39

we had a scan at 10 weeks and bought the cot + furniture as well as the pram after that. the wait time is 3 months so i'm glad we ordered it early! be careful in case you cant get what you want in time.

i'm 18+2 now and we've bought a nappy bin, a pram suit, a wee t shirt and a babygro thing but no other clothes etc. i got a fleece blanket too in ikea.

i need to spread the cost - just couldnt do it all in one go plus it takes times to read up on reviews of products (if thats what you want to do) and make your choices. there are lots of sales on now so def worth having a look for some more expensive items.

cazboldy · 04/06/2013 13:41

I am 22 wks with number 6 and today have bought the first thing!

A pack of unisex babygros with farm animals on them!

anastasiakrupnik · 04/06/2013 14:02

A baby outfit with an elephant on, last night in H&M.

I'm 22 weeks today and couldn't get excited about shopping for the baby until I forced myself to find something I liked. I was more into the maternity wear for me!

A friend sold us a cot and bouncy chair a couple of weeks ago for £20 as she was emigrating and needed to be rid of them, but I had no idea what I was doing, just handed over the money. Also kindly gave us a bag of babywear but they might as well have been alien clothes. I couldn't really imagine having a baby to put them on.

He's been kicking hard since last night though so I guess he approves of my choice!

everythinghippie29 · 04/06/2013 14:05

Some good advice here. I'll keep my eyes peeled for some deals and maybe buy a few bits and bobs. Grin

We started buying after 28 weeks.. some baby clothing and wipes etc .. then on 34 weeks we bought car seat pram.. and now 36 weeks and still searching for right cot.. Confused

Futterby · 04/06/2013 14:19

I bought a load of stuff quite early just because I love charity shops and if I didn't get it when I did, it would be gone. And if something, touch wood it doesn't, did go wrong then we'll still need it in the future. I was about seven weeks when I got the cot - £40 in a charity shop for a beautiful cot (mattress included but we're getting a new one anyway).

Bejeena · 04/06/2013 14:26

I am 29 weeks today. I got my first bits at 21 weeks and I only then got some cloth nappies off ebay as they were good price and a few packs of baby vests, muslins etc.

We have bought or borrowed everything secondhand (pram, crib, cotbed, babybjorn, clothes, car seat) apart from 3 outfits that I thought too cute to resist, a snowsuit and the bedding/new crib mattress. Both grandmothers have been knitting and crocheting blankets like mad!

I don't intend to buy anything else apart from the baby monitor. Also I will probably buy one pack of disposable nappies, but won't stock up as we hope to use cloth, if the cloth isn't working then I can send hubby to the shops surely? I also wasn't intending to buy any wipes either, plan on using cotton wool or making some disposables out of flannels.

I am assuming that this is ok? Or am I totally missing the point?

MiniPenguinMaker · 04/06/2013 14:31

I didn't get anything until after the anomaly scan at 20 weeks. The first thing I bought was a cashmere baby hat from Brora :) I'd been coveting it for ages and thinking how sweet it would look on a little one.

To be honest, only just done any serious shopping now (34 weeks) - changing mat, nappies, basic baby clothes, other kit. I have a sling and a bedside cot on order, but don't yet have a pram or car seat. I have looked around and chosen what I want, though - just haven't actually bought yet.

Franykins · 04/06/2013 15:03

I bought a cute pj set in asda for £4 3 days before my 12 week scan (I was planning to get it after the scan as a treat but it was in the sale so got it before) Went for my scan and was told it was twins Grin had to take the pj set back as I wanted matching ones so swapped it for a different style cos they didn't have the same one anymore. We are now going to wait to by anything till after the 20 week scan I think, but really need to spread the cost due to needing enough for 2 babies. But there is a lot of sorting and re thinking to do as DP has two boys from a previous relationship that we have week on week off so its also a case of buying a car that is big enough for all of us and eventually a new house! Very excited about having twins but man are they gonna cost us haha.
