First thing you bought and how far along were you?

I was at a dinner party last night and a mum who was there scoffed and laughed at my partner and I when we said we were going to wait until a couple of months before due date to stock up on things like baby wipes, nappies etc. We are both first timers so felt maybe we were being naive or something. I'm a bit superstitious ( crazy and not typically, I know!) about stock piling baby things too early. She said we should start buying things now ( I'm 14 weeks) and although I'm excited to buy, still think its a bit early.

We will be decorating the nursery at about 30 weeks I think. DPs dad is a builder/decorator and can get it done fairly quick. We will prob get cot bed and furniture sorted at this point just so its done.

Wondered what the first 'little' bits you got for baby were, how far along you were? Thanks.

Wow everyone seems to be well ahead of me! I'm 28 weeks (first baby) and we just bought our first item, a baby bath! We have made a list and are now planning on purchasing the essentials over the remaining weeks but it is minefield out there with all the different products, every company wanting your hard earned dosh.

sjuperyoni · 04/06/2013 15:16

Tell a lie, first thing i bought dd2 was a wee outfit from h & m with 'mum + dad = me' on it, i found out i was expecting 6 days before dps birthday so gave him that and the positive test in a wee bag Grin as an early present, his response was ''that won't fit me'' Hmm :)

The first thing I ever bought was about 3 years ago in the highlands of Bolivia. I saw the cutest little artisan hat and figured one day I?d have a baby. I bought a few other little items of handmade baby clothing from the deep dark depths of the world which aside from my hubbie, who was travelling with me at the time, I haven?t shown or admitted to anyone? yet!

Aside from that, we began buying baby related stuff after the 20 week scan. As first time parents-to-be, hubbie and I didn?t feel ready to splash out beforehand. Knowing however that we have a beautifully formed baby growing inside me gave us the confidence and the kick up the butt to start the spree. The first round of shopping happened at our local NCT Nearly New sale at week 25 which was great! I would highly recommend. We?ve made huge progress since and have a feeling we?ll have everything we need by 29 weeks! Baby shopping is so much fun!

My suggestion to you is just do what feels right for you? everyone?s timings are different. I have a friend who didn?t buy a single thing before her baby was born, out of pure superstition. She literally arrived at the hospital with the bare minimum, only with stuff she was given by her Mum. I was the complete opposite. As I said, each to their own!!

Bought a moses basket at 28 weeks after a hormonal flood of tears and wailing to dh that "the baby won't have anywhere to sleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep!"

badguider · 04/06/2013 16:40

I don't really plan to 'stock up' - we've borrowed the big things and we will get the minimum of small things like sleepsuits, blankets and sheets as we dont' know what size he'll be when he's born... nappies, wipes, creams and stuff we'll again buy a small amount to start then we can change brand or size if we want easily.

He's got a carseat and somewhere to sleep (i'm 26+5).

I refuse to believe i'll be soooooooo tired I can't click an internet order or that DH can't make it to the supermarket half a mile up the road!

merrymouse · 04/06/2013 16:51

Only things you really, really need are car seat, somewhere for them to sleep and something for them to wear after birth. Unless you live somewhere out of Internet delivery range it's perfectly possible to pick up rest as you go along.

TheCatIsUpTheDuff · 04/06/2013 17:02

I bought a little stripy hat at 18 weeks, but didn't want to buy anything I couldn't give away until after the scan. All is fine at 20 weeks, so I'm going to start now...

Mintyy · 04/06/2013 17:07

Apart from curtains for the nursery, I bought a few babygrows in Peter Jones in the week before my maternity leave. So about 36 weeks.

I did the rest of the shopping when I was on ml. Needed something to do ... was incredibly bored being at home suddenly doing nothing.

Fairypants · 04/06/2013 17:13

I bought a small item of clothing for each of my girls at about 6 weeks to make it seem more real-then didn't get anything else til after 20 weeks. Finished shopping for dd1 at about 35 weeks and for dd2 at 25 weeks but she was due just before Xmas so did baby shopping early so I could move on to Xmas shopping. Also I couldn't walk properly after 20 weeks so knew I had to do it quick, before I was completely crippled!
Some stuff (furniture and pram) you have to order a couple of months in advanced if you are v specific. If you are happy to get what mothercare has in stock, you can get it last minute. A lot of places let you order those things and you set a delivery date (just before you are due) and you can pay it off whenever you want before then. There are loads of options and it depends how you feel as you go on.

2Labradors · 04/06/2013 17:54

I'm 14 weeks and haven't bought anything either. It's baby #3 for us but we weren't planning on having anymore after 2 so we got rid of/sold everything years ago, so we don't have even 1 thing!

I've allowed myself to look at things and have an idea of what items I want. Think I will start buying properly after the 20 week scan which is beginning of July. I'm saving money though from my wages, both for things we will need and for when I'm on maternity pay and feeling poor.

Barbie1 · 04/06/2013 17:57

A bib when I was 30 weeks. After having a previous mc I daren't believe I would finally have a baby.

I remember crying as I paid for it Blush they guy at the till looked like this Hmm

I still have it now, dd is 3 and ds is one Smile

Alexandra6 · 04/06/2013 18:23

Funnily enough I'm 14 weeks and decided to do the nursery up at 30 weeks! Wasn't going to buy anything yet and then saw a cute little monkey soft toy when I was shopping and cracked (like the poster above, cried a bit in the shop oops! Blush )

The way I see it, is there is plenty of time and I haven't had the smoothest pregnancy so would prefer to wait and get it all together. I'll start with the absolute essentials and take it from there.

Excited85 · 04/06/2013 18:25

Not got a single thing yet and 20 weeks. Was putting it off until scan but even though that's all ok it still feels too early!

Bunnylion · 04/06/2013 18:27

I bought a blanket after the 20 week scan.

I then ordered some furniture from Mamas & Papas and delivery time was 8 weeks - so don't leave it too late!

Xmasbaby11 · 04/06/2013 18:42

We started buying bits and pieces from 12 weeks, and got all the major stuff by 25 weeks. I found it took a while because I researched things like buggies, monitors well and then we were going to NCT sales to see what we could pick up. It was hard only buying neutral clothes though, so I think I'd find out the gender next time!

june2013 · 04/06/2013 18:51

I'm 38+2 and still not done the nursery. We have essentials in case she comes early. Hospital bag was only just prepared this weekend. Speak to anyone of your parents' generation and they'll probably tell you how different things were back in their day (I know my mum does!).

Sounds like a very rude woman indeed!

Good luck!

LouiseD29 · 04/06/2013 22:53

31 weeks on Saturday and so far have four babygrows (all impractical and unsuitable) and.... nothing else! Mum has Moses basket for us and we're planning on buying a cot this weekend. Pram/car seat research is underway (finally!)

Not doing a nursery. Baby won't care. Is that really heartless and unwelcoming of us???

mrspaddy · 04/06/2013 23:02

I'm 27 weeks and also picked up a few things on my travels before I started baby planning! Lovely little puppets and things.
I don't it is at all unusual to wait until baby is nearly here. A lot of friends didn't do anything except hospital bag and deposit for cot/pram. I can totally understand that.

I got a bit excited after very early scan/scare and bought little bugs for tummy time. Since then I have picked up a set of bibs, a few little things every couple of weeks. Even the non bio Persil etc. I didn't get too many nappies as I don't know how long the baby will stay in newborn so have a couple of packets.

We have chosen our travel system and moses basket. Won't collect them. We have bought a chest of drawers.

Smilehappy · 04/06/2013 23:40

I'm 18 weeks

first thing we bought at 13weeks was steriliser and bottles, since then, we have bath and top&tail bowl, car seat and one baby outfit (bought it after we found out the sex) we will be leaving it until 24weeks + to get crib and bigger nursery furniture, as for wipes and nappies, if we see a great deal on we would possibly sway to buy some! Smile

TarkaTheOtter · 05/06/2013 09:33

With dd I started at about 29 weeks. With this baby I don't intend to get much until baby is actually here but we have most things already.

theboutiquemummy · 05/06/2013 09:39

We brought the essentials only and waiting until DS arrived so much depends on your child

kd83 · 05/06/2013 09:50

I'm 21 weeks and still not sure what exactly we need to buy. We've planned for the big stuff, my parents are getting us the buggy and we will add the cot attachment and car seat, and a friend is giving us second-hand nursery furniture (cotbed and changing unit) so we'll just need to get the mattress etc.

But what else do we need? Is there a helpful list anywhere here on mumsnet or anywhere else that someone can recommend?

mymagaret · 05/06/2013 12:27

We are 12 weeks and after our first scan bought two little outfits but that's it for now. We are waiting until our 20 week now and will start buying things after that. I agree with not wanting to jinx anything, i don't think it matters when you start buying. Its a personal thing , as long as you have the essentials for when baby arrives its up to you when you start the shopping :)

lucamom · 05/06/2013 21:22

When 6 weeks pg with my first DS, I bought his first 'cot toy'/soft toy. The general consensus was that it was bad luck to buy stuff (certainly before 12 weeks), but I figured that if it went wrong, the baby did still exist and deserved to be bought something new, and that wondering what to do with a stuffed animal would be the least of my concerns.

Since then, I've made it a tradition with all 3 of my pregnancies, at 6 weeks I get their special toy. At 6, 4 and 1 they still sleep with them now, and I kept the receipts for their keepsake boxes.

On a different note, we bought 2 of each - always helps to have a spare of a fave toy, for wash days and potential losses!

curiousgeorgie · 06/06/2013 13:05

I bought a little stuffed rabbit after the 12 week scan, and after I found out the sex at 16 weeks I bought everything!

In my first pregnancy I bought stuff before I was even pregnant Blush
