Had my booking in appointment a few days ago and now have my scan all booked :) There is one thing that's bothering me tho, I had to do a sample (just a pee on a stick type one) and it had too squares on it,(nothing like I'd seen before) I showed it to her she said fine just throw it in the bin. But I wished I'd asked what it was for? Water infection test or a preg test? Its not like me to not be nosy!

Protein levels?

AnnoyedByAlfieBear · 03/06/2013 09:01

Congrats by the way!

The stick they give me to pee on has a whole row of squares, no idea what for and I've never asked! The only things I know they check for are sugar and protein.

Thankyou annoyed :) so excited! Hoppus, that does make sense. I just wondered. I'm 8 weeks now and no-one has really confirmed I am pregnant. The only tests I've had done is the ones we've done ourselves so I suppose I was hoping it was a preg test x

Its to check the acidity and any protein in your wee I think? So indicates any infection or sugar.

FobblyWoof · 03/06/2013 09:36

Sounds like sugar/protein.

They give these to diabetics to test sometimes. I'm not sure but I think it tests protein as diabetics have protein in their urine if their blood sugars have been high.

MisselthwaiteManor · 03/06/2013 10:00

They don't usually bother giving you a pregnancy test because they're the same as the home pregnancy tests so there's not much point.

pumpkinsweetie · 03/06/2013 10:05

Sounds like a dip test to check for protein etc

BentleyBelly · 03/06/2013 12:28

Was it this www.alibaba.com/product-gs/547110829/glucose_urine_test_strips.html ?

Badgerwife · 03/06/2013 13:54

they check for protein. If there is they might refer you for further tests as it's one of the signs of pre-eclampsia

Ilovestackingcups · 03/06/2013 14:24

MWs trust home pregnancy tests, so they don't test you again themselves. I remember feeling the same as you in the early weeks, like 'it took this long to get here, how come there's not more going on?' but it will happen in the weeks following your 20 week scan, so don't worry.
Congratulations!

Having worked in Maternity the things they regularly check with these sticks are; Ketones-show if you're not eating enough, ie, if you're poorly or having bad morning sickness. Protein and Leukacytes, may indicate a UTI or other infection, and in later pregnancy raised protein can indicate pre-eclampsia. Sugar-consistently high readings may indicate gestational diabetes (or drinking too much coke etc...!). Blood-may indicate an infection or late pregnancy that things might be happening! Also checks acidity! Some sticks check all of the above, some just specifics. Hope this helps!
