Where to start with baby clothes?!

Hello all - so I just had my 20 week scan yesterday and so happy and relieved that all is well. My husband and I had a plan of 'celebrating' the scan with buying the first little outfit for the little one, mostly for us really to finally indulge just a little bit and so off we trundled to Oxford St after work. We tried BabyGap, Zara, a couple of other places. But so utterly bamboozled by baby sizes that we just walked out again - also still feels a bit surreal buying baby clothes (it's our first)!
Not planning to buy loads of stuff right now, as it's still early, but then I came home to look online and was flummoxed again by what people say you should and shouldn't buy for newborns! Is it worth buying teeny tiny (but oh so cute) newborn sizes if they won't last longer than a few weeks? Or do you just go for 0-3 months even if it's a bit big for them at first?
From a Confused mother-to-be!

DD lived in vests and sleep suits until she was at least 4 months. I agree with almost everything people have said so far, except that you'll definitely need new born size to start. DD was 9lbs, but very long and slim. New born size was too small, so she was in 0-3M from the off. Kind of hoping DD2 will also be tall when she arrives in September, otherwise we'll be having a rush shopping trip to get some smaller sizes! :)

Oh, we did use long sleeved vests when DD was a little older, 4M+. We used them as t-shirts to go with jeans or leggings, and under all the lovely knitted cardigans that family had made for her. Very, very cute.

Starting to get the hang of this now. I need a few more sleep suits but have enough vests and bodysuits. Bodysuits confused me because the ones I got have cute little pictures on them but what's the point if they're just going under stuff?? Although I'm due in August so could maybe use as tshirts for the amazing summer we're going to have!

Checked the sizing as well and apart from 2 body suits which are 0-3 months, everything else is "first size" or "newborn"
