Toddler has chicken pox

Hi everyone

My toddler has just woken up with chicken pox. I am seven weeks pregnant and had CP as a child.

Does anybody know whether there is a risk to me and the baby in this situation. Can't see any clear guidelines as to whether I should avoid contact with DD and stay in bed all weekend eating cake while DH does the hard work?

If you had cp as a child you should be immune and so your daughter's cp should not be a problem for you or the baby. If there's any doubt you've had it yourself, or you think there may be some reason why you'd be in the rare minority of people who don't develop immunity (I.e. you think you've had it more than once before - v unlikely, but it happens), then you can get a blood test to check your immunity levels, but in my experience, most doctors would say it's unnecessary if you had cp as a child and you should be fine. Worth mentioning to your gp or mw though for completeness.

Took DD to see GP (fantastic service from 111 - took symptoms and we were in front of a GP 20 mins later).

I've been sent to A&E for an emergency immune test, which feels a little extreme but GP was adamant. I'm now in a queue of 600 people, many looking very unwell, feeling like a bit of a time waster

You absolutely shouldn't feel like a time waster. CP can be contracted a second time even if you've had it as a child (eg if you had a mild dose) and it's very dangerous in pregnancy.

Thanks Citcaea. A&E have told me they don't know why I've been sent it what to do. Waiting for obs & gynae consult now.

This happened to me I'd had it as a child so wasn't tested for immunity. I was 24 weeks, didn't catch it. The although there are online stories of people catching it twice I don't know of anyone who has caught it from a dc.
