I am 31 weeks atm and booked for a homebirth.Went to see mw last Thursday and baby is now breech. How can i turn this baby round? I really want my homebirth and would be terrified if i had to have a cs.My other 3 births have been normal deliveries.Has anyone managed to successfully turn a breech baby? Or has anyone delivered a breech vaginally?
Any help gratefully recieved x

Agalch - you're at the mw's as I type and I'm about to do my moxibustion!! Hope it went well - let us know. My mw appt is at 2.30 today, so keep your fingers crossed for me!

agalch · 21/06/2006 13:32

Straightforward,mw came to see me at home to finish paperwork for homebirth if it goes aheadI have an ante-natal next Thursday and whether or not she thinks baby is cephalic is booking me in for a scan either Mon or Tues the next week for a scan to check babys position.

Let me know how your appt goes this afternoon.

Mawbroon, thanks again for all the info.Mw said today she doesn't know what will happen on day of scan,it may be scan only or it may be scan and ecv so will have to wait and see what happens.

I'm not so worried about the actual c/s iyswim,it's what happens afterwards, not being able to get out of bed, having a catheter in,bed bath etc, thats the bits that really scare me.

Agalch - i had a section at Christmas for my third baby ( long story - he was breech, was turned successfully but i then went 19 days late and they wouldnt induce me).

I didnt want one due to having an 18 month old at home. But I was only in hospital 24 hours & didnt have a bed bath!!!! I coulndt get out of bed for about 16 hours but some women get up after 12. They take the catheter out befroe you get up. It was no big deal. i DID have help at home though, SIL and DH.

If your other births were straightforward, why wont they let you have a vaginal delivery in hospital? Have you asked your consultant?

agalch · 21/06/2006 15:37

Hi KristinaM

I havn't spoken to my consultant yet at all.But from what my mw says and other people i know who have used my local hosp they don't let you have a breech baby vaginally. Not sure i would want to anyway really in case anything went wrong.
If i have to have a c/s then i'll just have to but i honestly have nightmares about it.Don't know why cos loads of people have them and say it was fine.
This is my last (no4) baby and i had my heart set on a homebirth so maybe thats part of it.

May be brave and ask about a vaginal birth lol

Hi pamina

Am doing all sorts of tricks including the frozen peas .

My mw who is really keen for me to have my homebirth is super confident that my doc at the hosp will be able to turn the lo.She says he is very good so fingers crossed.

Last time she palpated me she wouldn't commit to the position of the baby because she wasn't sure.So she says herself it could have turned on it's own,i think it's still breech tho.

Well, mw is completely baffled as to what position my baby's in - thinks there's a possibility that it is head down but very far back in the womb(?) Anyway, she's booked me in for a scan next Wednesday. Apparently, they don't even try to turn transverse babies as it's too difficult, so I'd be booked in for a c-s if that's the way he or she is lying.

However, when I asked if that was it then, she said that they always scan you on the theatre table, and that if baby was the right way round then, they wouldn't do an unnecessary c-s. Think it might be a bit of a huge mind melt to have got psyched up for a c-s, be on the table and everything, then be told to go home though!?!

mawbroon · 21/06/2006 20:57

agalch - see if you prod what you think might be the head, it should bob around a bit. Try to put one hand at the front of your bump and the other round to the side a bit. I got to the stage where the midwife was asking me how the baby was lying because I was able to feel really easily. Where are you feeling kicks?

agalch · 21/06/2006 21:09

Mawbroon.i seem to get loads of movements all over atm.Sometimes the top of my bump seems empty and sometimes it feels really feel so i dunno what the babys doing.

Straightforward,it's annoying not to know but at least the scan will tell you one way or another.
Let us know how you get on next Wed.Fingers crossed for you xxx

good luck

Agalch, I know three people who've had breech babies vaginally. All were fine. One was my mum 30 years ago (although she said it was hellish.. and that's why I decided with mine to have a section rather than try - hospital did give me a choice), and two in the last couple of years. IT IS POSSIBLE, although I think they would be v. careful about monitoring the baby, so I can't see them letting you have a home birth or water birth, as I would expect they'd want to keep a monitor on quite a lot.

Keep hoping the baby turns.. fingers crossed for you.

agalch · 22/06/2006 19:24

Hi Clairemow

Thanks for keeping your fingers crossed lol.
I am keeping positive and doing my reflexology etc.I don't know if i would even chance having a breech vaginal in hosp in case things went wrong .
I definitly wouldn't try it at home or in pool anyway. Will see what the scan reveals. My reflexologist didn't find out until delivery hers was breech and was whipped off for an emergency section. The mw had been feeling the bum and assumed it was the head so heres hoping my mw's wrong too.
Will post again when theres news.

Acupuncture is extremely effective in turning breech babies but you need to make sure you go to someone experienced (and no respectable practitioner would do such a treatment the first time they saw you so if your baby is still breech and you wanted to try this you would have to find one pretty quick). DD was breech at 34 weeks but the acupuncturist I was seeing said he wouldn't do the treatment until 38 weeks at which stage she had turned herself. Ironically I didn't end up with my planned homebirth which was one of the reasons I was so desperate for her not to be breech!

agalch · 22/06/2006 22:14

Sunnydelight

Can't find anyone to recommend anyone anyway and as i'm 36 wks on Sunday thinl it's probably too late now.

Do you mind if i ask why your homebirth didn't happen? Or am i being a nosy cow?

I used one of these and my baby turned the next day, at 37 weeks.

Worth a try?

Aglach

How are you?
Weren't you due for a scan today? (or am I getting my dates mixed up?)

Thinking of you
Suni

agalch · 27/06/2006 21:05

hi Suni

No not due a scan.I am seeing my mw on Thursday morning and she will arrange a scan for sometime next week to check if baby is still breech. Will hopefully be safe to have ecv if he/she is still wrong way round.

I am exactly 37 weeks on Sunday so i feel like times running away from me.I havn't organised anything for a homebirth eg pool etc as i have no idea if a vaginal birth is poss never mind a homebirth.
I was so glad to hear your lo has turned.I will let you know when scan is anyway.

xx

Hang on in there agalch - I had a scan yesterday and she said that the head is right down in my pelvis. I have a hunch that it has been all along and that her transverse suspicions were wrong, but it could have turned. Hope it's the same for you hon - thinking of you xxxx

emzickle · 29/06/2006 13:04

Sorry - would it be ok if some one explained what they actually do to you when you have an ECV?

agalch · 29/06/2006 17:00

Emzickle, don't know how exactly how they do it,i'm sure someone else can answer that.

Straightforward, just posted on our July thread and good news.Mw feels baby is now head down so i'm having a scan to confirm this on Monday. If it is cephalic then mw will get all the boxes of equipment and entinox delivered Tues/Wed next week and its looking good atm.

Will let you know how the scan goes on Monday.

Fab news that your baby is head down too.I was out at a 40th on Sat doing the Timewarp etc so maybe that done the trick? Or was it the frozen peas/reflexology? I don't know and i don't care.avoiding a c/s is my aim and if baby is cephalic then i'm halfway there.

Brilliant news agalch - I think we're only about 2 days apart on EDD too (I'm 19th), so just hope these naughty little ones stay there for the next 2-3 weeks now!

moyasmum · 30/06/2006 10:57

agalch Really good news about the presentation, and not to pour cold water ,but if baby doesn't turn and you have to have a cs, please dont view it as a ngative, but as a preventative measure.
12 years ago, after a fight to have a home birth (i'de seen the local hosp!)and all the stuff arranged and delivered , my dd was discovered to be breech. I had a full day by myself crying about what wasnt going to happen. I understand not wanting this foisted upon you but try and keep as positive about this birth as you were about the planned one. Get firm committments about physical help afterwards though, people dont think how much bending and straining they do throughout the day. Good luck.

agalch · 30/06/2006 14:35

Thanks SF,wonder which one of us will go first? I am soooo excited now.I think i have put off thinking about it all with the thought of a c/s.Mine can't come before the 14 th tho as thats the day i finally get to give up work.

Was meant to be finishing on the 23rd june but the parents have left arranging other care so late i feel obliged to work up to the last minute.

Thanks Moyasmum too.If a c/s was/is necessary then i would have to get on with it.The op itself doesn't worry me,it's afterwards that scares the s**t out of me lol. I am a wuss but i can't get my head round it.

Anyway will let you know how Monday goes.

Take care xx

my friend has a breech baby. Sorry to hijack thread but does anyone know which reflexology areas you do. I know the acupressure / moxibustion technique. which reflex aeas do yuo do if using reflexology to try and turn baby

agalch · 03/07/2006 15:47

Hi all

Sorry anne, not sure about the moxtibustion/reflexology thingy.

Well good news about my lo.He/she is now def head down and i am ordering my birth pool today in preperation for my homebirth.

Mw will get boxes/delivery pack sorted tomorrow and bring them on Wed/Thurs.

i have to phone fire brigade and home insurance when my gases arrive,oh my god i am going to be having a baby ooohhhhh i can't believe it!!!!
Can you tell i am a little excited?

OP posts:
mawbroon · 03/07/2006 16:17

agalch - that's great news. Hope the wee one stays that way for you! Good luck!

annetizzismum - is it not the same pressure point for reflexology as it is for moxibustion/accupuncture? ie on the outside edge of the little toe, about level with the nailbed.
