I am 31 weeks atm and booked for a homebirth.Went to see mw last Thursday and baby is now breech. How can i turn this baby round? I really want my homebirth and would be terrified if i had to have a cs.My other 3 births have been normal deliveries.Has anyone managed to successfully turn a breech baby? Or has anyone delivered a breech vaginally?
Any help gratefully recieved x

How did the reflexology go agalch? Will try it myself if you rate it!

My baby isn't breech but oblique transverse, and I have been doing the moxibustion thing every other evening (MC - it was only £1 a stick, so maybe you were done?) and also a chinese herbal footbath every night for 30 mins before a bath, bum-in-air exercises and bed. Have a MW appt next Wed (will be 36 wks) and she will book in for a scan and possible ECV if baby hasn't turned.

Like you, I really don't want a c-s unless necessary, as I can't bear the idea of recovery in hospital + 6 weeks of being unable to drive etc with a new baby and a restless 4 year old DD at home for the summer hols - OMG!!!!

Hi SF

had my 1st reflexology this morning and it was great.i'm not even thinking now that it will "make" the baby turn, more like relaxed chilled mummy will destress baby and he/she will do what its blooming told!!

Have seen mw today also and shes not sure whether babys breech or cephalic so will have appt with her in 2 weeks time and prob scan and ecv on 3rd July so i am crossing everything to avoid a c/s.

my worst nightmare also having a c/s and summer hols with a huffy 14.5(with a gf) a niceish 10.5 yr old and a 2 yr old dd who is murder atm so i'll pray for you and you pray for me lol. Grin

Thanks Pamina3,i will read thru when i have a spare 5/10 mins.

Hi

I had my baby turned at 38 weeks by external pushing and shoving when they discovered he was breech...it was too late to try anything else to engourage him to turn. It was painful experience with only 50% success chance but luckily it worked and I would do it again as it meant I could have a fantastic natural birth and not a caeserean. Its not pleasant but I was determined I wanted a normal birth....ask your midwife about it as I am not sure how late they wait before trying ..and baby sometimes turns back again. Good luck

agalch · 17/06/2006 11:16

Mw has said even if she is fairly sure baby is cephalic at next ante-natal in 2 weeks when i'll be 37 weeks she will send me for a scan anyway just to be certain baby is head down. Think with me planning homebirth shes being extra cautious. So will have the scan on #rd to check babys position.Don't know if they will do ecv the same day or not? Anyone know ?

I was wondering that too agalch - apparently you need to stay in for a bit afterwards while they monitor you and I keep wondering what I'll do about DD, esp as it's likely to be Thurs or Fri this week that they do it so I don't have much time.

agalch · 20/06/2006 12:10

Hi Straightforward

I am due to go for the scan on the 3rd if they can fit me in when mw phones on the 29th after my ante natal.I am also childminding still. My dp's days off that week are fri 30th sat and sun so will have to hopefully get a swap so he can be off to look after dd and mindees.Poor thing,he's not looking forward to it lol. My mw is doing a home visit tomorrow re my planned homebirth so i'll ask her and let you know if it's possible that they'll do it on the same day as the scan.
Do you have anyone who can look after your dd while you go in?

depends on when it is - she's really not very good at all at leaving my side at the moment (to put it mildly!) so need to have someone who is confident enough to deal with that! She does go to preschool in the mornings, so it would just be an afternoon. DH can't take any more time off work at the mo. It would really help just to know when it was likely to be in order to plan!!

agalch · 20/06/2006 12:41

Sounds just like my dd SF,she wil be 2 in August and only just recently stopped breastfeeding which i do think makes them a bit clingier sometimes.

The thing that worries me is that if the ecv goes "wrong" and baby gets really distressed an immediate c/s can be needed. eek!!!

Will let you know what my mw says anyway, shes here at 10.30 tomorrow and i'll post straight after that.

haven't read all the posts, so hope I'm not repeating. Had breech DS - first baby, by c-section - helpfully I went into labour at 38 weeks, a week before appointment to try and turn him...

I was told that being on all fours is meant to help turn them? I used to watch tv in the evening with my arse in the air until my elbows ached. Didn't work though - he was breech from 28 weeks and never moved.

clairemow · 20/06/2006 14:42

and someone also recommended accupuncture??

mawbroon · 20/06/2006 15:21

agalch - am I muddling you with someone else or do you live in West Lothian?

agalch · 20/06/2006 15:41

Hi mawbroon, yes i do live in West Lothian.I take it you are out here too?

Yes, I am near Bathgate. I take it you are under the consultants at St Johns?

When they booked me in for ECV, they also booked me in for a section. This was so that if there was an emergency with the ECV then I was already booked in. Also if ECV was a no-go then they would just do a section anyway which is what happened to me as the consultant said there was no way that ds was going to budge as he was stuck fast.
And yes, the weather is pants. Sad

agalch · 20/06/2006 16:46

Mawbroon i am under the consultants at st Johns. I had no idea that c/s would need to be booked hand in hand with the ecv Shock.I am meant to be working till the 14 th and due on the 23rd.At how many weeks pg did you have the ecv done?

And did you have the scan done on the same day as the ecv and c/s?

thanks

agalch, I hesitate to speak for mawbroon, but I think she might have meant booked in as in arranged, rather than doing it there and then? I certainly had to wait for the section after my ECV had failed, I wouldn't have thought they would take you straight into theatre unless you were threatening to go into labour, would they?

mawbroon · 20/06/2006 17:06

I had a couple of trips to the hospital in the last couple of weeks. The first time, the consultant did a superquick scan just to confirm the position before deciding if I was a candidate for ECV, then the next time, they did a growth scan just to look at the babys size etc. (they were 10oz out on his weight btw) I was booked in for 39+1 and had to go up the day before for pre meds etc in case I had to have a section. I had to fast from midnight the night before and be at the hospital for 7am or 7.30am. They told me that if the ECV was successful then I would be monitored for a bit and then sent home.
I was happy to go along with what they decided though so I have no idea how they would have reacted if I had been pushing for a breech delivery for example.

mawbroon · 20/06/2006 17:14

Sorry, crossed posts tatmum.
No, it was done there and then on the same day. I turned up at the hospital for my appointment at 39+1 for ECV and maybe a section. I didn't know if I was going home that day with the baby turned or if I was going to have my baby later that morning.

mawbroon · 20/06/2006 17:14

Oh blimey, sorry didn't mean to get your name wrong tamumBlush

tamum · 20/06/2006 19:01

No problem :) Sorry for misrepresenting you too! I thought ECVs were usually done at 37 weeks, sorry.

agalch · 20/06/2006 19:15

OMG Imagine me saying to my kids see you later and oh might or might not have the baby today.

How long did St Johns keep you in Mawbroon?

tamum i will be exactly 37 weeks when the mw wants me scanned so i'm guessing it will be a quick scan to check baby is still breech and whether or not ecv can be done.

Mw is doing a home visit tomorrow as the plan is a homebirth if baby does turn so will be picking her brains.

Thanks for the info mawbroon and you too tamum Smile

Oh, good luck agalch :)

clairemow · 20/06/2006 19:38

I think the thing is that ECV can bring on labour - that's what I was warned anyway. It sounds like Mawbroon had specific circumstances that made this the best option? (hope I'm not misrepresenting you either!!). Certainly, when I was booked in for ECV (39 weeks), they didn't mention booking a section as well, just that one risk of ECV was bring labour on - which I figured at 39 weeks, wasn't really a problem!

mawbroon · 20/06/2006 20:00

agalch - I was in for three nights. DS is my first but the girl in the bed next to me only stayed in for 2 nights after her section as her ds was her second baby.
Who is your consultant? It was Dr Dewart who was mine and for all we know, if you have someone different, they might prefer to organise things differently. Forewarned is forearmed as they say, so you might possibly be able to arrange something different if the arrangement I had doesn't suit you.
And don't forget that your baby might still turn!!Grin I always wanted to whack anyone that said that to me and when the scan revealed that ds had one leg by his head and the other underneath, it was pretty bloody obvious to me that he wasn't going to turn, but still they said it..Angry
Good luck and keep us updated.
