Cribs - swinging/sliding/not?

I'm looking at getting a used crib from ebay. If you were getting a crib, would you go for a swinging crib, a sliding crib or one that doesn't move, and why?

Would really appreciate opinions!

I had a swinging one but kept it in the fixed position the vast majority of the time.

I've gone for a gliding one. I read to avoid swinging due to imbalance with babies weight. But not used it yet as waiting for baby to arrive.

I used the John Lewis sliding crib for my 3 - think they call it "Anna" Gliding Crib.

You can fix it so you have 2 options, and the gliding just seemed safer that something that could tip but that was just my feeling. I loved it.

I have read that the motion that babies find soothing is a top-to-tail movement, not a side-to-side one. So a swinging crib might not help, and just be a worry because of the chance of the baby unbalancing it and ending up stuck in a corner.

Thanks. A couple of you have said what's been concerning me with the thought of a swinging one - that the baby's weight may unbalance it and mean they end up sleeping in the corner pressed up against the side.

you are normally able put the crib into a fixed position and then it doesn't tip to the side

I had the John Lewis gliding crib for DS but he still didn't want to be put down in it and we ended up co-sleeping. I think it just really depends on the baby but for our DS I don't think stationary/gliding/rocking would've made any difference, he just didn't want to be put down away from us.

We were given a swinging crib. The size was great as she lasted longer in there than she would have in the moses basket. I wouldn't have bought a swinging one personally. You could stop it from swinging but a couple of wriggles sometimes still tipped it and she was wedged against the side. That could have been the one we had rather than swinging cribs in general though! It certainly never tipped enought to be dangerous or anything. We are re-building it tonight in preparation for baby number 2, so I'm not totally negative about it!
