second hand Moses basket and cot, yay or nay?

Kindly offered to me but read somewhere that where they haven't been stored correctly etc, damp and mould spores might possibly cause cot death. Don't feel I can ask about storage as seems ungrateful, wwyd?

I bought a second hand one. Looks perfect but think I will wash all lining and anti-bac the weave. I say go for it!

I used a second hand Moses basket (from a friend) just bought a new mattress. Got a reasonable one from kiddicare. I know a few people who perhaps use the cot they had from childhood (saved in lofts by their parents) I do think the new mattress is key. I think when reading about cot deth the guidelines are a new mattress for a new child. I would certainly do that if I was lucky enough to have 2nd dc.

I borrowed a carry cot and bought a new mattress. With DC3 we had to replace cot, bought one second hand on Gumtree and turned out I knew the sellers. Used their mattress, no problems. For our cot bed (which Dc3is about to go into) same mattress for all 3 kids.

I would definitely buy a new mattress. That's where any mould spores are likely to be, as far as I know.

I agree, get new mattresses and wash any fabric parts and they'll be fine.

Well I had never heard this and had a second hand cot and moses basket, dd was of course fine! I did get a new mattress for the cot. If I were you I would just say thankyou very much and gratefully receive!!

yes agree with the above, as long as you have a new mattress and give it a really good scrub and dry out, it will be fine.

If you can put the mattress out in the bright sun that would kill off any potential mould spores.

Tbh my dd slept in her moses basket for for a grand total of 45 mins on two separate occasions

If mattress is coated in plastic - as they often are - it may be fine with a wipe down anyway.

Thanks everyone, yes it is then with new mattresses!!! Was just thinking that the Moses basket material might be a risk as its woven straw or whatever, but will just give good wipe down and sit in the sun for a bit.

Only on mn that I cld post a seemingly random question at bedtime and wake up to lots of sensible answers. If I had asked my dh, I would have got a grunt and an unhelpful 'up to you' response...

Sorry to hijack thread but have similar situation. We've bought a crib but dsis has given us a Moses basket. I'll buy a new mattress but do I need to buy a new cover or will putting it in a boil wash be ok? Same with sheets etc can you just boil wash them?

You are meant to get new mattresses never did. DF lent me a weirded sized crib. I'm pretty sure her DC3 never got a new mattress after my two either.

I don't think it was ever in storage long enough to grow that kind of mold..

My cot has a totally seal mattress with a washable cover and that too went from one DD two the next without being put in the loft.

I used ds3s Moses basket for ds4. I didn't buy a new mattress as it has one of those that are completely sealed and wipe down. Tbh unless it's a very expensive Moses basket it's sometimes as cheap to buy a new one as to change the mattress. We only paid £25 for it in the sale.

We will replace the mattress in the cot though.

Actually kiddicare have some for £30 at the moment, it's £18 if you want to buy a new mattress

You can get a new moses mattress/crib mattress for about a tenner on ebay. That's what I did when I borrowed a crib from a friend.
We were lent a moses from family which we were going to use downstairs. I didn't buy a new mattress for that but he hardly ever slept in it anyway and the mattress had a protective cover on it.

cogito - I would suggest boil wash, if they still fit then use them, if not buy new.
