Low-lying placenta rescan

Quick question for those who've had a low-lying placenta rescan later in pregnancy... They diagnosed a low-lying placenta at 20weeks - was 8mm from cervical OS on the front wall (anterior) - confirmed by dildocam.

Have just had it confirmed from my midwife that I will definitely be rescanned (there was some doubt as sonographer was very vaguely 'it's fine' about it) in 3-5 weeks time (currently 29 gone).

Just wanted to ask - will this be a walk in, drop your pants dildocam from the off scan? Or will they have a look abdominally first (and if it's moved enough won't bother with part 2)?

I always assumed there would be a 'bright side' to this of getting to see junior again before B-Day, but it suddenly occurred to me that they might just go straight for the vaginal scan and therefore, would see nothing.

Knowing will also ease my anxiety and help me gauge whether or not I beg DP to take a half day off work to accompany me as I find intimate examinations incredibly stressful...

Can anyone shed light on this random one please? Thanks in advance

Brave, as you know I had the same issue, and I had a normal abdominal scan only (my placenta is posterior though, not sure if that makes a difference). Was told that it's all fine now.

Didn't take DH, you can't really see much anyway at this stage.

Thanks Hazle - could handle a normal scan no problem, but could do with the moral support if it comes to another TV one. Don't get me wrong, I'm a big girl and can handle most things! But would just feel a lot less stressed if I had him there...

I've got a scan coming up next week for the same thing, and the letter from my hospital says it'll be an abdominal scan - at least to start with.

90% of people who were low-lying at 20 weeks are no longer low-lying at 34, apparently. And they just use the TV scan if the placenta looks low or borderline on the ordinary abdominal one.

I'm going to take DH with me for mine - I might need the moral support!

Thanks Bungle - was hoping the letter would outline things but this hasn't appeared yet!

I think I will get DP to come with me just in case, it's just difficult for him as he works 90 minutes away and he's not been in post long so doesn't want to take the mickey re time off (especially pre paternity leave!).

Good luck with yours - I don't think mine's moved up much yet as I still can't feel anything moving south of my belly button, although maybe it's moved enough and the cervix electric shocks are a good sign in this case!

Having my re-scan tomorrow (at 29 weeks) - not expecting it to be anything else, but abdominal. Will let you know.

Bungle is right, and if it was 8mm at 20 weeks it should be well clear by now. Most hospitals would do the Abdo scan and TV only if they were not sure so I think you can be pretty confident that the Abdo scan alone will do. They will do the growth measurements while you are there but not a full scan.
Having said that, there are different protocols for this from place to place so it isn't 100% certain that they won't do something else.

I had an abdominal scan to start with but as others have said we couldn't really see much then the sonographer said she wasn't quite sure about the position of the placenta and asked to do an internal scan. Not my favorite tuing but only took a second and confirmed the placenta is out of the way.
It was much more traumatic for 20 month old dd1 who got quite upset when I started getting undressed.

I think that's the biggest issue I've had with all this, the absence of any information or conflicting information, it makes it confusing and stressful when you don't know what's going on.

I'm very grateful that there's nothing seriously wrong and that I haven't had any bleeding at all, but still to go from being told 'it'll be fine, nothing to worry about' by sonographer then to be blocked from pregnancy yoga and told I can't get a fit to fly cert by midwives it gives conflicting messages.

The TV scan was a shock at 20 weeks, but fortunately a friend had told me that she'd had one at 12 weeks because of baby's position so at least I knew there was a chance of that happening. 20-week scan letter had zero indication there would be any possibility of it otherwise.

Will wait and see what appt letter says but think it's safest to plan for TV and then hope for the best!

I had total placenta praevia with DD1. Was identified as low lying placenta at 20 week scan but only by abdominal scan. Told not to worry as they move up in 95% of cases. Slight bleed at 25 weeks, big bleed at 30 weeks and lucky not to be kept in hospital from then. Biggest bleed at 37+4 and the planned C section at 38 weeks. She was a bit small for dates, 2.45kg but is a strapping 7yr old now and had great VBAC with DD2 at 40+17!! Never had TV scan due to PP (but did with DD2 early mc scare - remember it being not nice at all!)

I had an abdominal scan, with a vaginal scan at the end at my request because she couldn't quite see one edge abdominally without causing me massive amounts of pain pressing down.

Should have said, had low lying placenta with DD2 at 20 weeks and thought "oh here we go again" but was all fine and moved out the way at scan at 32weeks. Placenta praevia was a bit stressful but in a way worse for close family. Think FIL still gets stressed thinking about it and DD1will be 8 in couple of months. You get thru it when it's you cos you have to

Had a scan today at 29 weeks. Abdominal only. Placenta still low, but the radiologist said she was not expecting it to have moved up just yet, thus another scan at 34 weeks.

Good that it was abdominal I guess Tequila but not so that it's not moved yet. Fx it moves by 34!

FWIW I'm pretty sure mine hasn't moved yet and I'm 29+4 - I still have a movement black hole that goes from my belly button to basically my butt! Is yours anterior or posterior?

My rescan was today and all fine - the placenta has moved up and away since my last scan at 28 weeks.

I had TV scan at 34 weeks for low lying, anterior placenta but the sonographer told me at 20 weeks that would be what they would do so wasn't a surprise. Fortunately had moved as well. Hope yours goes well.

Update - just found out that I won't be rescanned after all as placenta wasn't covering the internal os at 20 weeks. So, the last 10 weeks of worry (since being told that, 'actually it is a problem and you can't fly or do yoga etc') has been all for nothing.

Good news that they're so confident everything is well that they won't check, but very frustrating at all the crappy information.

Fingers crossed for everyone else - and the bright side is at least I don't have to worry about being interfered with... until labur, at least
