Hello. I am 6 weeks pregnant and Thursday evening I suddenly felt funny hotflush and as if I needed the toilet. When I wiped there was light brown discharge. Freaked out - went to lie down and drank lots of fluid as I had not drunk much during the day. Next day at work discharge darker brown and a little on pad. Came home early and went to bed as discharge less when not walking about. My doctor is closed Fridays and with bank holiday not open til Tuesday. I don't have a midwife yet. Phoned epu who said it's fairly normal and to come in Tuesday morning if still worried. Or go to a&e if it becomes red bleeding. Sorry for long post just so worried I might loose baby :-( is brown discharge really normal?

I didn't find it helpful to be dismissed by friends/doctor/MN - "light bleeding is completely normal, don't worry" - and then not be remotely prepared for when the worst did happen.

I am 6 weeks pregnant too and experienced the brown discharge last night. I rang my local EPU who said they cant scan me til 8 weeks and booked me in but brown is better than red and to keep an eye on it. I have had some cramping on one side but they don't seem too concerned about this. Roll on the scan next Thursday!

Hi Danis - hoping your scan went well today?

Danlsb · 08/05/2013 14:28

Hello I thought I would update you ( as someone may find my experience reasuring) I went to the EPU on Tuesday but they could not see me without a GP letter. They booked me in for the next day under the previso that I call my GP and get them to contact the EPU. So I called my doctor straight away andvthe said they would do it rang again in the afternoon and they assured me they had done it. Arrived at the epu for my 1120 scan only to find the GP had not been in contact and then when the nurse called them they denied ever speaking to me! The staff at chasefarm EPU were fantastic they managed to get the doctor to fax them and after 2 stressful hours I got a scan. They tried an external but could not see anything so had to have an internal scan ( which I was suprised to find did not hurt) and there was little baby with a strong heart beat. All looks good. They confirmed that bleeding on early pregnancy is common. Thank you all for your support :-)

Great news - the fanny cam really isn't that bad is it! Looks awful when they put the condom onto the mahoosive wand thing but really is just the tip that goes in

Really pleased everything is ok with your little bean

Dear all
I'm between 5-6 weeks in my first pregnancy and this morning experienced brown discharge and this has been ongoing all day. I spoke to my GP who said it was probably ok but just to monitor it and let them know if there were any other changes. I was devastated, assuming the worst but my GP and this forum have made me feel so much better and I am thankful that there is somewhere for people to share these concerns, stories advice etc.
So thank you to you all for sharing, I am praying that everything goes well with this pregnancy but know anything can happen during these early days but have certainly gained some reassurance from this group.

Thanks for sharing.

Hi I am around 6 1/2 weeks pregnant and had light brown discharge on and off since xmas day. I've not had to wear a pad. Had cramps and the odd stitch like pains on and off, felt like my period was starting. Called Epu on Friday and explained everything. They said it sounds like implantation discharge/bleeding. And just to keep an eye on it and phone back on Monday. Can't sleep or eat properly.
Anyone else experience similar?😢😕

Hollielouise · 29/12/2019 08:48

@bub19 Try to relax - it's totally normal. I had it for 2-3 days at 6 weeks and went for an early scan to see the little heartbeat and everything was fine. I'm 10.5 weeks now. As long as it doesn't change to red flow with clots and severe cramps all you can do is relax... and get an early scan if needed to help reassure yourself 💕

Hi all I am new to all this posting on groups so sorry if this is not allowed.. I found out Christmas was expecting our second child and about 6 days later started to bleed wasn’t enough to fill a pad or wasn’t even going onto one had no pains/cramps at all. Went to doctors and they said I was working out about 5.5 weeks pregnant, they told me to give it 48 hours and I would have a call back to see if it had stopped and if not they would refer me to epu for an early scan....felt like the longest 48hours of my life!! Had call back and the doctor was really rude and told me there was nothing they could do as sounded like I was miscarrying 😔 there was apparently no point sending me for a early scan as I was too early, I hadn’t had any bloods etc done at all mind. I rang epu myself a day later as I wasn’t prepared to expect what doctor had said without having any tests done. I have since stopped bleeding and home tests are all still coming back positive and I’ve been being sick. We have a scan tomorrow to check what’s going on 🤞🏻🤞🏻 I started having brown discharge this morning which has made me start to panic but going to try and stress and see what happens tomorrow. just wondering if I’m over panicking or this seems normal?! Sorry for long post but had to get it all out as it’s all that has been going through my head past week and half thanks.

bub19 · 10/01/2020 11:22

Hi all! Very new to this. Discovered over Christmas I’m pregnant with first baby (total surprise). Have had brown spotting over three days. Flew to Milan to join my partner and we had an emergency scan this morning to check things. Thankfully - they don’t make you wait here!

Doctor said there’s a small gap in the gestational sac where it hasn’t attached to the uterus. Scared me a LOT! But she did say it was very small and very common and that my exhaustion, nausea and the very audible heartbeat was positive.

I have been given progesterone to take daily and advised to really take it easy. Trying to stay calm and positive but was very upset this morning....

Buggles01 · 31/08/2020 11:16

Hi guys, I know this is an old post but it's one of the first results when you google "brown spotting 6 weeks pregnant" so I had to comment. I'm pregnant with my second and with this pregnancy and my first, I had brown spotting towards the end of week 5 and into week 6. Since I have two IVF babies, I get scanned at 6 weeks and both times, everything was perfect with no sign of a bleed in my uterus (so presumably it was my cervix). It made me unbelievably anxious but like others commented, I was told that as long as it's brown/old blood and not accompanied by cramps, it's generally normal. I had to comment because I know how stressful it is xx

Karakelly11 · 15/12/2022 05:54

I had brown discharge at 4 weeks then again at 6 weeks and was told it’s totally normal. I was told it is likely just from implantation when the blood vessels break sometimes it may form a small harmless clot and as this old blood gets pushed out you will have brown discharge. As long as it’s brown with no pain, it’s most likely okay. Just try to relax and what I told myself was that my baby did such a good job at implantation that it caused bleeding! Hope this helps:)

I'm just getting to 6 weeks today (ivf pregnancy) and woke up with bright red blood on wiping. I'm so worried. I've had 2 SCHs before in my natural pregnancies and then miscarried. I'm on clexane and aspirin too.
I've emailed my fertility clinic and have an appointment tomorrow morning at my recurrent miscarriage clinic for a scan. I have stopped aspirin and clexane. Any other advice? Positive stories? I'm having a freak out.

Danlsb · 18/04/2024 23:20

Try and stay positive- with my first successful pregnancy I had bright red then brown bleeding around 6 weeks then brown spotting again at 10 wks and was convinced I was losing her but all was fine and she is now a sassy 10yrs old. Keeping my fingers crossed for you x
