I've just had my 12 week scan today, during which I had a quadruple test to check for Downs. All but one of the tests were completed without problems and the risk assessed as low (normal nuchal translucency, nasal bone, foetal blow flow and serum biochemistry), however they were unable to 'assess the blood flow in DV', because they couldn't locate a valve in the baby's heart despite doing an abdominal and a vaginal scan. It was explained to me that this could be either because they simply couldn't find the valve due to the baby moving around / its position, or possibly because the baby doesn't have one. They've now referred me to a consultant cardiologist in a few days time and while they've assured me that I shouldn't worry, I am of course worried. When pressed for more details by my partner, we were told that if the valve doesn't exist (which sometimes happens) then in a worst case scenario this can put increased pressure on the heart and cause heart failure. Having subsequently tried to find out more about this on the web today, all i can find are research papers which don't all come to the same concusion, but one seems to suggest that abnormal or absent blood flow - when combined with an abnormal nuchal translucency reading -indicates a high risk of severe heart defect. However it doesn't indicate what this might mean on its own if everything else is deemed to be normal.
Does anyone have any experience or knowledge of this please?
