Going in for induction

Today! Gulp.

41 weeks today, but have high BP so going in now. Feeling mix of excitement and intense nervousness! Had sweep yesterday and plug's still there so could be a very long process with pessaries etc.

I guess you could say "sh*t just got real people!". Gah!

Any words of advice from prior inductees? I have a stack of magazines/books and a fully loaded iPad.

If you can, keep moving about a bit. I sat on my birthing ball while I was wired up to the monitors.

Good luck it can take quite some time so yes to lots if things to do! I'm having my third induction tomorrow for another overdue bubs we're all in it together

Thanks guys! Love the colouring book idea. Just about at my level.

3 inductions? Wowzers! I'm guessing that because you're not sobbing uncontrollably (I hope) at that, that it can be so bad.

Fear of the unknown is a terrible thing eh?!

Then at the end of it all I'll have become a parent! Holy moly!

I was induced at 40+11... take some snacks, chocolatey yummy snacks and crisps and some bottles of drink (juice, water). Take your iPad, phone, earphones, camera. Take your hospital bag with all your baby thing - obviously. Take some money, change for vending machines. IME you won't be able to read a book, so I wouldn't bother with a book.

Try to keep mobile while it's happening (to a certain extent). Good luck.

Just keep thinking of the baby, that's what I'm doing. Eyes on the prize I'm going to pop a colouring book in my bag too.

I've never experienced a normal labour, only 1 DC and he was induced so I'm afraid I can't compare.

Ultimately I didn't experience childbirth either because for me it ended in csection (not to worry you). Actually just in case (because intervention is more likely with inductions) if you have a nightie or a massive tshirt take that as well because pjs are no good if you end up with a csection.

Good luck op. My advice is to walk a lot in between pessaries/ monitoring etc. I swear it made my waters break spontaneously and therefore sped things up. Me and dh just did laps of the hospital! Also, the epidural is your friend if you go on the drip :)

The majority will say it takes ages - I was the opposite. Pessary in at 1pm, contractions started 2pm, 4cms by 5pm, baby out at 2am.

What I wasn't prepared for is induced labour can be pretty intense - I was having 6, sometimes 7, contractions in ten mins (I think 4 is the ideal?) - think early about what you might want pain relief wise!

But - the norm seems to be hours of waiting for things to happen so take plenty of books and card games etc. Good luck!

Oh yes indeed... Prepare your DP. If you think you're going to want an epidural once you're on the drip (if you go on it) let him know so he can discuss your wishes with the midwife if you're unable to.

I had an epidural after 3 hours on the drip and it was AMAZING!

I've been induced twice and it was fine, fast but fine, am hoping to be this time too as they think it will be a super fast birth and I don't want to give birth in the car! Def keep moving around. Good luck!

Thanks all. Feeling bit more reassured now. Key is to 'keep moving'. I'm a proper fidget-bum anyway so won't be good at lying down much.

EverythingIsTicketyBoo - am cabbing it in to the hospital around 11am. Just getting DP to triple-check the bag contents. Nervous much?!

He'll be less than useless at epidural time if it arises. The mere mention of the process in antenatal classes had him draining in colour and dry heaving. He's terrible with needles and has to leave the room when I've had bloods taken. Ha ha. Berk.

Hi all, just to let you know Edith (Edie) was born on Sunday morning. Induction was hard - had nothing but paracetamol for hours during contractions as they had no room on the labour ward and had to keep me on antenatal ward. Then was rushed in for emergency csection as her heart rate kept dropping with my contractions. But, after a rocky start and a few days in hospital we're now home and she's doing really well. An absolute dream baby! At 8lbs 11 I was somewhat glad of the csection after all that.

What a gorgeous name I love it, one of the triplets i was working with was called Eddie. Some things I suggest to clients who are due or going overdue is reflexology this works wonders as it increases the circulation, also loads of walking. Lastly lucozade. Oh one more thing pineapples.Feel free to send me a message with any questions you may have.

EverythingIsTicketyBoo - congratulations hon! That's great news, and another lovely name. Hope you're finding it good and enjoying yourself. I've even been quite amused by the baby blues bit. Bursting into tears has made me giggle each time. Silly hormones.

I just wanted to add that induction is ok. However I do take offence to people offering well meaning advice about eating pineapples or going for a walk. Trust me, this just sounds like patronising crap and of no help for those whose need practical advice (takes ages, pessary pre contraction are horrible and you don't get pain relief) for anyone who's ever faced an induction for going overdue!

Bringbring, I agree. I tried reflexology, hot curry, raspberry leaf tea, pineapple each morning, sex (that was awkward!)...etc...etc....

None of that worked. Your baby will come (or won't) when it's darn well good ready. It took drugs to kick start mine which I imagine is the norm for most overdue mums.

The only advice I'm now adhering to is the midwife telling DP he needs to keep me stocked up on chocolate as we're trying to breast feed. He's under strict instructions to force-feed me it.
