slap cheek

hi, i have been in contact with slap cheek and have had the blood test and awating for the results, has anybody out there been in the same situation?

I was in this situation a few months ago - I am a primary school teacher. I was signed off work until my test results came back, luckily they showed I am immune to it. Apparently the majority of people are and even if you're not it's quite unusual to get it and if you are unlucky enough to its even rarer for the baby to be affected. Saying that - my doctor wasn't prepared to let me take the risk, no matter how tiny.
Fingers crossed you should be OK - try not to worry about it. If the very worst happens, they can treat the baby before and after birth.

thanks its good to know there is other people in the same situation. do es anybody know what happens if your not immune to it? and how long does the results take?

Not sure how long the results take. My GP wasn't sure what would happen if I wasn't immune. According to sites on the net, they would do regular scanning, keep a close eye on the pregnancy.

I'm not too concerned as it was a friend's child who had it and on the 2 days I spent with him I didn't have much to do with him. My concern is that my 2 may be incubating it as they were all rolling around together.

I had this 8 years ago, and I hadn't been immune when my booking bloods were done, but had seroconverted (i.e. I had just acquired the infection). The test took about 2 days I think, and the consultant rang me and told me to come straight in. I had weekly scans for the next month or so until they were certain she was alright. Good luck.

well i have been waiting a week so far and still waiting,mine is my niece who i spent alot of time with right up till the day before her rash came out.my midwife wont tell me anything she just said wait for the results. im 14 weeks what about you?

hi its a virus that children get, its not harmfull to them and they are not that poorly, they just have a cold or sickness or headaches and then after 20 days they get a rash on the face that looks like they have been slapped on the cheeks, this then travels down the body.

My ds had this when i was about 8 wks pregnant, I had the blood tests and they showed i had no natural imunity, I didnt display any symtoms and am now 18wks.

It can cause miscarriage and the worst time for a mum2be to be exposed is before 20 wks. It wount cause birth defects and despite most doctors telling you it cant be treated it can.
My consultant has said basically the illness will cause the baby to become annemic and that with careful monitoring this can be tracked, if baby gets to bad then they can perform an inutero blood transfusion.
This is all of course if you get it and if it affects baby, the chances are low.

Hi, this happened to me 2 years ago. Had the test and turned out not to be immune, so I had to have another testafter a couple of weeks to see if I'd made any antibodies in the intervening time (which would have indicated that I'd been infected during the pg). Fortunately for me, that test also turned out to be negative, i.e. although I had contact with a child who probably had slapped cheek (it was never confirmed in the child though) I hadn't become infected, so that was the end of it. Test results took quite a while IIRC, 2-3 weeks maybe.

Hope things turn out OK for you both.

thanks, its a very scary time at the mo as i have had a lot of trouble before i came in to contact with slap cheek and i dont seem to be getting much help from my midwife she wont really tell me anything untill i have had the results,so im glad to hear from you all who have been through this thanks

A friend of mine got exposed to that with her first pregnancy. All was fine.

lisa - hope you are ok. I've had it apparently - hurrah! The results came in today. No need to fret now if my 2 develop it over the next 7 months.

My blood was taken on Tuesday 16 - last week. They do seem to be qucik round here with results.

Good news - glad you're ok, Lisa. What a relief!

DS is ill today and I'm wondering (and not worrying!) that he might be suffering with it. Roll on with our pregnancies!
