Diet Coke

I absolutely love diet coke and I tried my hardest to give it up when I found out I was pregnant. I have managed to cut down to one/two cans a day and try and buy the caffeine free diet coke (although this is hard as they don't usually have it in your local shop/petrol station etc and only sell the big bottles or multi-pack cans at supermarket. I try not to buy it from the supermarket as if I have bulk or a large bottle I drink it to quickly, where as buying the cans from the shop helps me to limit how much I have. I know it's terrible and bad for you. I feel so guilty when I have drunk some, I am truly addicted to the stuff. Does anyone have this or is addicted to diet coke in this way? I had it before I was pregnant, I think I got hooked during my uni days. It is like a drug and when I have it, I feel so much better and get a massive boost.

BTW Red Bull is worse than coke Grin

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 27/04/2013 16:57

It's worse but it tastes yummy. Wink

brettgirl2 · 27/04/2013 17:25

sorry schro but I strongly disagree Grin

jamtoast12 · 27/04/2013 17:44

Not sure of current guidelines but 4 years ago I think you were allowed 300mg caffeine per day and a can has 40ml so as long as you are not overdoing coffee etc you'll be fine.

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 27/04/2013 17:55

Brett It's at least better than coke? Coke scares me because I can't figure out what it tastes like... Confused

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 27/04/2013 17:56

Jam Current guidelines are still 300mg, I was shocked when I learned that as I cut all caffeine out last pregnancy and slept pretty much constantly.

BlackholesAndRevelations · 27/04/2013 18:34

Haha! schro, wtf does red bull taste like?! Grin I've been dying for a diet coke since posting on this thread!

nellyjelly · 27/04/2013 18:37

You can get cafeinne free diet coke.

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 27/04/2013 19:02

Blackholes It tastes kind of err citrusy/fruity... At least I can kind of relate the taste to something else, with Coke I just don't have a clue what is going on! :o

Nelly Caffeine free diet coke sounds utterly fruitless. :(

Yes I've re-read your comment:

"Sometimes a bad taste can be caused by bad teeth which are caused by, you've guessed it! cxxe or too much sugar..."

I only have one thing to say to that: No shit Sherlock.

newtobecoming This post is of no value, other to say i sympathize with your plight!

Schrosaw DH cured his chronic fatigue after his doc. suggested giving up eating wheat see "Wheat Belly" by William Davis M.D. It's bleedin' amazing he's like new man Grin.

Ppeat Mines is related to a genetic disorder, unfortunately diet wont help, I even tried going vegan and then fresh vegan. No joy!

Glad your DP managed to though. :)

Piffpaffpoff · 28/04/2013 11:48

I initially gave it up as I didn't like the idea of the artificial sweeteners - switched to full fat and fruit juice and then was diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes. I then saw a whole specialist team once a fortnight and the nutritionist within that team said it was ok to have it so I went back to diet coke in moderation.

ppeatfruit · 28/04/2013 12:17

Oh that's a shame shrow Sad but vegans do eat wheat !

Newtobecomingamum · 28/04/2013 12:26

I've really enjoyed reading all the posts and I think there is such conflicting info out there. The way I see it is, I don't drink, smoke, eat over 5 portions of fruit and veg a day and eating all the other good recommended stuff for pregnancy, I'm fit and healthy, baby is fine and all my scans and MW appointments are all fine. What I'm going to plan to do is maybe reduce it to max 1 can a day and try really hard to make it 1 can every other day of I can. My blimmin sickness has returned at 35 weeks and I'm feeling awful : ( I suffered for the first 5 months and the diet coke really helped. Signing off to have a can, I deserve it when I'm feeling like this :) X

Newtobcoming, I'm glad you've made a sensible decision. I believe you sometimes need small comforts to get through the worse parts of pregnancy. Hope you enjoy your can :)

dexterpat · 29/04/2013 23:12

After ds1 & 2 I was 5 stone heavier than my ideal weight - I switched to diet coke and lost 5 stone in two years - I still drink 3 cans a day I work full time need caffeine etc - I've had 2 very healthy children while drinking it and hope this one is the same - every so often a fat lady ( who is slimming) at work likes to tell me I shouldn't drink it etc - I'm 20 weeks I've put on 4 lb I'm healthy it's not perfect but I'm fine about it!!!
