What to do?

I am 12 weeks pregnant and there is a child in my daughters year at school that has just been diagnosed with slapped cheek I know it can be dangerous in pregnancy but do you think I should be worried? Apparently it is going round the school I don't think I have ever had it myself any advice much appreciated

Hi there my midwife did say to be careful of this. You need to get a blood test to check immunity. To be on the safe side I would see your GP as soon as you can but try not to worry. It hasn't been direct contact. I do hope all is ok and many congrats on your pregnancy!

Thank you just worried as being Friday I can not see gp till Monday I have not had contact with any of the children but read it can be carried for two weeks before the rash comes out so would not know if either of my dc's have it might phone nhs direct x

I am a teaching assistant and one if the children in my class had it. I rang my midwife and she said I needed a blood test to check immunity as if you have had it you are immune for life. My mum thinks I had it as a child but said it wasn't really diagnosed then. So I went for blood tests to be sure. But if not immune they said I will have extra scans to check if I end up catching it but if not they don't do anything x

I think I was exposed to it in my 3rd pregnancy and was already immune. Very likely you are immune so try not to worry.

Don't worry yourself too much. As well as it being more likely that you're immune there's also a much smaller chance that catching it will actually cause problems for your baby.

If you've already had your booking in bloods done they should be able to test that to see if you're already immune. (They 'lost' mine so I had to have another test, which they also lost! Hopefully you'll have more luck!!) If you weren't already immune, you'll have to have another blood test to check if you've caught it. Hope you get good news :)

If you've had your booking in appointment phone the hospital (or the place they were taken if different) as they keep those and can check them to see if you're immune. Saves you having to go back in.

I had the same worry as you (slapped cheek at DSs nursery when I was in early pregnancy) but I personally wouldn't panic at this point. There is a high chance you are immune. If you aren't immune (I wasn't) there is a high chance you won't get it. If you do get it (or have got it) it's not a certainty that it will cross the placenta. If it does cross the placenta it's not a certainty the baby will be affected. And even then, there are things that can be done. Just get it checked out as soon as you can so that you can either put your mind at rest because you're immune, or you'll know you're not and then you can get your midwife/hospital to keep an eye on things through more frequent monitoring.

Spoke to gp and he said if one of my dc's get it then I will be tested but to try not to worry as you can have it as a child and not even know then u are immune to it anyway thanks for your comments x

My friends 3 yr old got it when my friend was 20 weeks pregnant, she is a gp so thought she must have had it but then she got the rash!she had to have a scan every 2 weeks to check the baby wasn't affected and luckily he was fine and is now a healthy 1 week old. I'd just be sure to keep an eye out for the rash. x
