Can I request a repeat scan?

I've been really looking forward to the 20 week scan but it was awful. Scanner concluded everything was normal but with lots of negative comments along the way eg 'well it's legs are very short but they seem to be just in the normal range' and 'it doesn't seem to move very much'. She also said she couldn't tell the sex which I'd hoped to find out. Can I request another scan from someone else? Do you think I'd be reasonable to ask?

You can book a private scan if you want another look at your baby.

If there are no anomalies that need to be followed up on then I suspect you'll have to pay for a private scan. They don't guarantee they'll get the sex at a 20 week scan I'm afraid...

No, the scans are to check measurements, look at formation, fluid levels, placenta etc.

They are not to determine sex of the baby or to get nice pics for parents. ( although obviously it's nice too)

As everything was in the 'normal' range them they won't repeat the scan- it's unnecessary.

If you want a gender/ bonding scan you'll need to book a private one.

You could speak to them and say you were unhappy with it but if they have all the required measurements I don't think they'd rescan you. If you can afford to maybe a private scan would be a better option.

You can voice your concerns about developmental issues.

As for gender, that's just tough luck.

If everything was in the normal range it is very unlikely you would get a second scan but I do think that you should voice your concerns with regards how the scan was carried out and comments made and the lack of reassurance that you were given.

In the same position but its just tough I'm afraid. The priority is baby's health and development as if that's ok then that's your lot. Sometimes you will be offered a growth scan around 34 wks if baby is measuring very small or very big but its not guaranteed.

I've been on the opposite side with ds who was measured every fortnight, Amnio done etc etc. I'd much prefer to know baby is healthy and happy at 20wks than every two weeks worry about the outcome of the scan!

Probably not. Most women wait weeks to get their 'one' scan. They are usually fully booked for weeks and I don't think that's a valid reason.
Unfortunately you got a harsh sonographer but thats a personaility issue not a medical one.
With my second, the sonographer couldn't tell me the sex. I was really disappointed but sometimes they just can't get a shot in the time available. The scan is for the health of the baby not for the gender.
Some hospitals have a policy of not telling the gender to any of their patients anyway.

it sounds like you got an unpleasant sonographer, this is a shame but surely it is reassuring that everything was normal? Getting actual bad news at the 20 week scan is a devastating experience.

I had a clinician at my 20 week scan whose manner left something to be desired and the experience left me feeling less happy than I'd anticipated. (It wasn't in my head either - both people accompanying me felt the same). So I get where you're coming from, I really do.

If there were any problems with the measurements you would've been told and, if it were me, I wouldn't expose my baby to any more ultrasound than was medically necessary, by paying privately or even on the NHS.

In the kindest possible way, I'd advise you to let it go and and enjoy the rest of your pregnancy - and just do extra bump watching to make up for it

Book a private scan if you can, and complain to PALS if you can be bothered. It's not nice to have this type of experience and if you had it, I bet loads of other pregnant women who see the same sonographer will feel the same. 20 week scan is a big deal for the patient, its not nice that the sonographer was so negative throughout.

Ps. I had sort of similar (not rude sonographer but not a great scan due to baby position) and private scan made me feel a million times better. Well worth £80 to me.

Thanks all. I'm feeling a bit less panicky now. Have already made an appointment to go though the things that worried me with my midwife but as you've all said, it doesn't matter how she phrased it, the fact is the results were all in the normal range. Re the sex I might have a private scan as I'd still quite like to know but that's a lesser issue.

My 20wk scan with DS was not the best either the lady was rude and told me "I don't get paid to tell you the sex, so no!" So I was upset with that... I decided to go private sexing/bonding scan. It costs on average £75 and the staff there as you can imagine are lovely compared to nhs.

I've had a lot of scans with my 4 DC performed by several different people. Personally I found the 2 drs who scanned me were the most abrupt and my nicest scan was the private 4d one because they took more time and although they did measurements too, it was mostly about showing me what my baby looked like. I also had a lovely scan when I had my missed miscarriage. Sounds daft to say it was lovely but the sonographer took her time and explained everything to me during the scan and then went through the report with me, explaining what all the measurements were and pointing out the baby's arms, legs etc on the photo. It was much appreciated.

My 4d scan was free because my baby has a cleft lip but I think they are worth the money if you can afford it.
