I'm pregnant -but there is no medical supprt for weeks????

hi
I have just discovered im pregnant with my first child, I'm now 4 weeks (so very early!) Took a test after missing my period, when it was positive I called the Dr's and was given a number for a midwife who I will see in three weeks.
I'm surprised noone wants to check the test is right? or see me at all? Im now reseaching what im allowed to eat etc and im worried about miscarriage as im 35!
Is this normal? should I have an appointment with someone?

I think 8 weeks is normal. Remember being surprised the first time too. Do try not to worry! I know it's hard.

Thats normal, my test wasn't checked either just took my words for it, I didn't see a midwife till 10wks as they was booked up. Congratulations :) x

That's normal. But you can always make a GP appointment if you have any worries. I remember being told that the GPs had nothing more accurate than the over-the-counter tests.

Yep normal! It is a bit surprising isn't it but there's really not much a GP could do at 4 weeks and they'd just get you to POAS so accept that you can read a test yourself!

Also, the NHS website is a great resource if you're worried about eating the right things, exercise etc.

Yep it's normal Hun I'm now 17 weeks- 3days preg but it's number 4 but still I wasn't seen till 8weeks for booking in then had scan at 11wks 3days then didn't see anyone till 16 weeks now not seeing midwife till 28 weeks oh and scan at 19 was 3days then nothing till 36 weeks so try not to worrie Hun xx I know it's hard as being pregnant with baby 1 or baby 4 it's hard and scary but try to trust your body and baby take your vitamins and eat healthy drink water ect and every think will be ok xxx good luck in your pregnancy

Congratulations!

It's normal but that doesn't mean it's easy! They genuinely took my word for it - I even managed to get a free prescription at 8 weeks without a certificate by simply saying I was pregnant.

Relax and enjoy it as much as you can, if something is going to go wrong, then I'm afraid to say it will, and there's nothing you can do about it either way.

Eat healthily if you can, take prenatal vitamins or at least folic acid and try not to worry too much.

I'm 38 and didn't see anyone until just past 12 weeks...! So all very normal.

I didn't see anyone until 12 weeks 4 days!! but everything was and is fine. you can get all the info.you need on the nhs website and otherwise its just a wait and see game!! hope it all goes well for you

Remember pregnancy isn't an illness ...

The only thing I would recommend right now is to start taking pregnacare vitamins.

I have to agree and am also a little apprehensive myself! I'm currently 5wks (first pregnancy) and when I called into my surgery to complete a form, they just thrust me a maternity pack thingy and said the midwife would contact me at 17wks?! Surely this seems a bit late? And as a first timer, I have absolutely NO idea what I'm meant to do in the meantime? Please can someone shed some light?!

When I found out, I went to the Dr, and all he did was ask for the first day of my last period, whether I smoked and if I was taking Folic Acid. He did smile a lot as he could see my DH and I were very excited and nervous! Other than that, we didn't receive a MW letter until around 7 weeks to give us dates for our 12 week scan and booking in date.

I found the first few weeks to be most stressful, because you just don't know how the pg is progressing, but it will soon pass and you will get your first scan.

The best place to start is with the pregnancy and baby guide on the NHS website - it will tell you what to do or avoid, foods to eat and not, supplements to take etc...Folic Acid and Vit D are key! And don't take any Vit A supplements.

...oh, and I was given the flu jab immediately but I think the flu season is officially over now so this might not apply to you.

When my grandmother had children, you didn't even contact a doctor until you had missed 2 periods. I think because most people find out so early, it means you feel neglected or anxious with a longish initial wait to get into the system. I definitely found the first trimesters with my 3 as lasting FOREVER!

Applepie that does seem too late - I think there's a NICE guideline to be booked in by 12 weeks, and you need to have first scan between 11 and 13+4 weeks if you want a nuchal test doing.

I'd ring back to double check and raise your concerns if I were you...

It could be that you won't see your midwife until 17 weeks, but you will need booking in and scan before then.

It's normal because the tests are so accurate these days there is no point in testing you again, I found out at 4 weeks, didn't see anyone till I was 9 weeks

LilBear Thanks for that, so you suggest I call my surgery and ask yeah? And forgive my ignorance, but what's a nuchal? I seriously know NOTHING about pregnancy and what it entails :-(

Yes, it's all normal... and while the flu season is officially over - if you are intending to get one then book yourself in for a flu jab now. Flu is shite at the best of times.. it's even worse if you catch it while pg.

Applepie - that is too late. It's my understanding that they need to do blood tests before the nuchal test (screening for downs syndrome) - our surgery do that at 12 weeks.

Applepie, that seems WAY too late. Booking in appts with MW are around 10w usually preceding scan and screening tests at 12w. We have to have booking in blood tests at 10w too. I'd give the surgery another call.

Applepie- agree with the others that seems too late- assuming you want to have the screening done. See NHS website here which explains about screening for Downs Syndrome and the timescale for it.

Good idea to double check with your surgery.

This is the norm, but if you want reassurance and check the test you can find a pathology lab that does Beta HCG blood tests and do a couple spaced 48h from each other to see how your HCG is growing (should be 60% increase over 48h).
