Hi ladies,

My midwife sent me for an early scan for some pain I was having. I found out i was not as far gone as I thought, only just 5 weeks pregnant. All they could see was a yolk sac nothing else and they suggested i go back next week for another scan.
What does this mean? Is it normal just to see a yolk sac at this stage? I'm so nervous there's something wrong :/ my first pregnancy and usually cursed with bad luch so very prone to negative thinking :( Anyone been for an early scan??

yes, it's totally normal just to see a sac at this stage. You can google 5 week pregnant scan photos if you want to compare.

Beamae · 17/04/2013 11:59

I had a 6 week scan after a suspected miscarriage. There were two sacs, one with a heartbeat and one empty. A couple of weeks later another scan showed two heartbeats. They suspect the second twin implanted a couple of days later which is why the sac appeared to be empty in the early scan.

I've just had a scan at 6.5 weeks (for dating purposes - wasn't sure if was 6.5 or 10.5wks) and they could only see the sac. They said that there was a slightly more opaque area on the scan, which might be the embryo, but it was far too early to judge if everything is developing as it should. However, they said that was completely normal and invited me for another scan in two weeks. They said they'll compare sac measurements from the two scans to be sure everything's growing at the expected rate, so it could be that that's what they'll do at your next scan too.

NumberTwoDue · 17/04/2013 12:44

Totally normal. I had this at six weeks after a big bleed and totally panicked. Went back ten days later and they saw a heartbeat. It was a massive relief. Turns out they had my dates slightly wrong (my due date was shifted back a bit after the dating scan) so it was even earlier than they'd thought and unlikely that they'd have see the heart beat in the first scan.

Try not to worry and rest up until the next scan.

(By the way, my little 'un is a strapping 17 month old now, very healthy and happy)

Thanks ladies, its nicer to hear from women who have actually been through the same thing! I am going to have to ban myself from googleing everything as its terrifying me :/
Fingers crossed its good news next week :)

I had a scan at 5+2 and the only thing they could see was the yolk sack...just! I'm now 14+4 and have had my 12 week scan which showed a healthy, growing baby.

It's incredible how it will grow from barely nothing into what resembles a baby in a matter of weeks.

Good luck with it all.

EuroShaggleton · 17/04/2013 13:01

I'm surprised they scanned as early as 5 weeks. A yolk sac is all you would expect to see that that point. I hope it will all turn out ok for you.

SeriousStuff · 17/04/2013 15:51

I had my scan at 5 weeks because I'd been having pain in my shoulder, which can be a symptom of ectopic pregnancy, and the earlier you can identify that the better. Luckily, all is well!

DanniiH · 17/04/2013 16:48

Yes I had an early scan due to spotting, I thought I was 6+2 but they said I was less than 5 weeks, there was only a yolk sack to be seen but they seemed happy with that and signed me off as having a viable pregnancy. I was worried still as I hadn't actually seen a baby but had my 12 weeks scan 3 weeks ago so my mind is now I've finally seen there is a baby there! You're lucky they said you can get another early scan because I wasn't allowed one so at least you won't have to wait for your 12 week one!

Good luck and let us know when you see your baby! x

RJM17 · 17/04/2013 18:01

Hi I am now 9 weeks and have already had 4 scans because of bleeding and previous mc. My first one was at just under 5 weeks and there wasn't even a yolk sac which scaredw but I can happily say at my last one there was a baby bouncing around with a very strong heartbeat.
So please don't worry if u don't see much at first scan they may just ask u to come back in a couple of weeks.
Good luck and let us know how u get on xx

PistachioTruffle · 17/04/2013 20:13

Hi, I'm a similar situation, went for a scan and realised I'm not as far along as I thought, have to wait to repeat the scan in 10 days. The responses here are good to hear though!

I had one due to having some pain at 4 weeks 5 days and they couldn't even find my baby! I'm now nearly 16 weeks and touch wood everything has been fine so far. I had another scan at 8 weeks and then the 12 weeks one and all has been perfect. So don't panic! :)

MummyJetsetter · 24/04/2013 09:20

That's great news! x

hi all ive been for a 5 wk scan today due to multiple mcs and 1 ectopic, im happy to say we saw my little bean, no HB yet but that's normal back in 2 wks for HB scan. Really do feel its the baby aspirin that has got us this far

imaginationzero · 22/06/2013 09:57

Hello, I had a mc at 12 was back on Christmas Day 2011, and am now finally 5wk+1 after 18 months of trying and 4 rounds of Clomid. I have a drs appointment in Monday. Do you think they will offer an early scan? I'm not worried about mc again and feel quite calm about the whole thing. Not many symptoms but I didn't have any last time either- is that normal? Are they still to come?

marmitelover · 22/06/2013 19:25

hi imaginationzero

I'm also pregnant after 2 mc and I saw the doc today who has referred me to the EPU next week as I can't confirm dates (last miscarriage was only early May). If you think a scan would calm you, I think most EPUs let you just rock up. Certainly at mine, one of the boxes to tick as to why you are there is 'previous miscarriage'. Good luck!

imaginationzero · 24/06/2013 19:53

Marmite, I went to see the doctor today. I did ask about an early scan bug he said 'no' in short unless there is a reason eg spotting. Things seen good so far, no sickness, no bleeding so I'm hopeful, have to wait until 12 weeks I guess.

ilikebaking · 24/06/2013 20:18

You could always have an early reassurance scan at a private clinic? Like babybond? They do it from really early... 7 weeks I think?

imaginationzero · 24/06/2013 21:00

Baking, thanks for the advice. I feel pretty happy with everything to be honest, don't feel worried at all. Dr said they don't offer earlier scans as they give false hope or don't prove anything medically. Baby could be fine at 7w, then not the next day. I had an early scan last time and all was fine with strong heartbeat, then had a mc 2 weeks later
