Cervical Scans, what to do?

I had two lletz procedures last year and am now 14 weeks pregnant. I am under consultant care for other reasons and asked the consultant at 9 weeks about cervical length scan which she said she'd arrange.

At my 12 week scan I asked the sonography if anything was booked and she said that they would normally scan women who'd had Lletz at their 20 week scan. Surely that's not early enough?

I meant to ask at my appointment on Monday and forgot, my next appointment isn't for two weeks. Should I ring to ask about it or will it wait another two weeks? Can I book a cervical length scan privately? I'm worried.

Hi midori. Yes, 20 week scan is too late. They should start at 14 or 16 weeks. If I were you I'd call today and insist. Good luck.

I've had two lletz procedures two and about 4 colposcopies... and as a result had a cervical stitch yesterday, am 15 weeks.

The earlier they stitch you the better so absolutely get a scan ASAP, they checked mine very early at 7 weeks and again at 12. Couldn't get me in fast enough for the stitch. My cervix was deemed very short at about 2 cms, when they did the stitch yesterday they said in parts there was hardly anything so it was v tricky.

I agree it should be earlier. If your cervix is a normal length then they may not scan you again, if it is short they will want to keep an eye on it or possibly put in a stitch.

Oh god, I'm really worried now. I will ring first thing in the morning to discuss with them.

Hi, I'm 8 weeks and will need to be checked too as I've had a lletz. How do they actually check the cervix? Is it risky at all in itself (the procedure)? Just wondered, of course I'm sure it's better to have it, especially if they find the cervix is short - I'm just not sure what to expect?

Like with Kelly, I had the stitch too. Had my first cervical scan about 14 weeks and the op a week later. I wouldn't want to wait until 20 weeks but I'm sure they'll fit you in, try not to worry.

Alexandra, it's very rare from what I understand that you need the stitch after one lletz procedure, so try not to worry about it. They check the cervix with an internal ultrasound (dildocam) which is undignified but not painful. The procedure does carry a 1% risk, but my consultant said she's been doing about 40 a year for several years and never lost a baby due to the op itself.

Sorry, to clarify, the scan carrieas almost no risk, the procedure to put the stitch in carries the 1% risk.

I lost ds4 at 20 weeks due to incompetent cervix, I'd had 2 pre term births at 35 and 32 weeks but they didn't think it was due to the cervix. I was booked for a scan at 24 weeks.

With ds5 I had a stitch placed at 14 weeks but they wouldn't scan me at all through the pg. Also not many places do them privately, if you an find somewhere private I'd say have one at 16 weeks then again at 18, my cervix failed at 18 +4 they cast around £100.

If a problem is found the earlier the stitch is place the better as preventative stitches work better than rescue ones, my stitch was removed at 35 weeks and ds5 was born by cs at 38 +2. however it is rare to have a problem with just one lletz procedure.
