Plus I've got increasingly intense cramps, especially in my lower back. Could it mean I was briefly pregnant but it didn't make it? I've read that cramps are normal but the posts are all about 5 weeks onwards.

Wish I hadn't done the 2nd test, it was my first wee of the day (I did the first response one at lunchtime yesterday) so I was convinced it would be a clear +ve.

As far as I know a positive is a positive but you can get false negatives. I had cramps that I thought were menstrual cramps before I took a test with DS. Congratulations!

each different brand of test requires different levels of hormones in the urine. maybe you don't have a high enough level for the boots one.

nomore thanks, that's very comforting.

banana shouldn't the levels be high now I'm 16 days post ovulation? That's why I'm worried, especially having done it first thing.

It can still take time to get a strong positive... It took nearly a week for me to get a very strong line.

Hang in there, only time will tell

The first response tests are very sensitive which might explain why you got a positive on that but not on a different brand. 16 dpo is relatively early and you never know, you know might have ovulated later than you thought (I ovulated earlier than I thought based on my scan!).
As it stands, you're pregnant. Chances are if you do another test today/tomorrow morning it'll show a darker line. The cramps are totally normal too!

Try a clear blue one!! I had 3 positives and 2 negatives so was very confused!!
But I am now nearly 8 weeks and have seen the babies heartbeat!!
I was told by my doctor it is extremely rare to get a false positive but quite common to get a false negative especially early on.
I would say u are pregnant so congratulations!!! X

I got a faint positive on a superdrug early response then a negative on a boots. I'm now 14 weeks so obviously not enough hcg for the boots test!!

Thanks everyone. I'm going to wait a few days and go to the docs. Free test and maybe they can tell me what I need to do now Confused
