Anyone else had a foot stomping toddler like tantrum when told "no sorry I can't tell the sex" by the sonographer.

I did feel very silly immediately after my mini tantrum and we decided a surprise would be lovely. However 6 weeks on still unable to buy the things I like I'm feeling the toddler me creep back. Am I utterly ridiculous??

If you really want to know I'd look into paying for a private scan? I think I would have considered this if they hadn't been able to tell me at 20 week scan.

I had a private scan, mainly for that reason but also coz the sonographer was a little miserable and sucked all my excitement out of me. Private scan brought it back and gave me the sex. Total result.

Pay for a private scan if you're that bothered. Finding out the sex is a luxury if there's time and the baby is cooperative. The scan is to detect abnormalities, not to help you with your shopping list. I hope you didn't throw a wobbly at the sonographer, or that if you did you apologised profusely.

No i most certainly did not aim my frustration at the sonographer. Although she was an utter misery and as they were clearly short staffed rushed me through. Leaving me feeling a little uncared for. I just moaned to the other half on the way to the car. I have considered a private scan but I read somewhere quite a while ago though that extra scans can be detrimental to the development of soft tissues I think that's why I feel slightly hard done by.

I sincerely hope that extra scans can't damage the baby as I am having to have regular scans or medical reasons - so far I've had 5 scans and I'm only 25 weeks pregnant, with regular scans to still come for the rest of the pregnancy

Please do a lot of research before deciding how you feel about additional plans. I did and found no concrete evidence that it affects the baby at all. In fact, as another poster said anyone who's high risk will get multiple scans and in certain countries they get far more regular scanning than we do. All without incident.

I had scans every week from 5 months on with dd2.

It does seem to be the medical line (I am not medical, just what I have gathered from reading) that multiple scans aren't harmful, but that you should never do any procedure more than is necessary just in case. (good practice not to intervene when not necessary)

Different places consider different numbers of scans to be normal as well. In some places you get one, in others 2, and if you are a miscarriage risk, probably 3/4/5

There was an interesting study from Sweden, where they found that baby boys which had had many scans were much more likely to be left handed than those who hadn't. While being left handed isn't a problem, it did suggest that maybe scans do have some effects that we don't yet know, or can't yet see.

wow. seriously. my son is left handed and neither me nor his father is. i had four scans for him

bernadette - they were talking about lots of scans - 20-30 iirc. Not sure why these kids/mums had so many scans and obviously the result surprised them so they are presumably now doing lots more research. Could be one of those things that is a false link, but it was very early days.

I had lots with dd2 - one a week for 2-3 months. She is fine.

I don't think any other studies have backed up that Swedish one, to date - I would still tend towards not having unnecessary scans, though.

I'm sure the scan was performed professionally, so you were cared for in the way that matters, but I'm sorry she was a grump!

4d scans are fab and can tell you the sex. Would def recommend if you can afford it . Tbh it wouldve been a problem if we didn't want to know coz my dd we could tell straight away she was a little girlie :D
