Has anyone had a baby this big without gestational diabetes?

My beautiful son was born last year weighing 11lb8. I had been measuring big for the last month of pregnancy, but was never diagnosed with GD, and he arrived only one day late. My GP is being typically unhelpful, but as we start to think about planning number 2, I'm fretting about whether I'm destined to have an even bigger baby next time. It is really preying on my mind.
So thought I'd ask wise mumsnetters: is undiagnosed GD common? And do women ever have a first baby that big without GD?

For the sake of anyone still pregnant it is probably worth saying that my giant baby wasn't a bad delivery at all, despite being back-to-back. Just remembering watching OBEM when pregnant and freaking out at an 11lb baby with shoulder dystocia...

Oh good point Ell DS (the 10lb 3.5 one) was delivered really well, gas and air, couple of stitches and done! Hence the decision to risk having a 3rd. Big doesn't automatically mean problems.

A friend of mine was a stone at birth. No GD it seems and all 5 of his siblings were apparently a perfectly normal size at birth. He stayed big, too.

My twins were big for premature babies they weighed 12lbs together and were born at 34 weeks. I dread to think how enormous they would have been had I reached term for twins. No GD, was tested at 28 weeks.
