Agalch, i had a GTT with each of my pregnancies. You basically have blood taken, then you're made to drink a very sweet sugary liquid. I had Lucozade first time round but wasn't so lucky the 2nd... i must warn you.. it taste vile!
You then basically hang around for 2 hours and then your bloods are taken again.
Thats all there is too it!

Thanks womba, not so worried about the test so much,it's the time factor.I can't be hanging around if i am picking up at nursery.I may ask when i go in if i'll be away in time and they may hurry themselves up for a change lol.

I think you could be struggling time wise. What distance do you have to travel to fetch the mindee?

You could be OK but hospitals are notoriously free with their interpretation of appointment times from my experience.

Soupdragon
My comm mw says i'll be fine timewise but then shes always 20 mins late so who knows.Dp is off tomorrow to look after my dd,may say to parent if i am struggling to pick up he may have to or she might have to have a back up plan.feel awful as she has only just started with meBlush

You may well have a hard time, hospitals generally take forever. You will also probably feel really really bad. You can't eat from midnight the night before, until your bloods are taken the second time. I think I felt poorly for the rest of the day.

make some sandwiches to eat in the car afterwards!!

can the mother arrange with the nursery ti hang onto her dd til you're there?

agalch · 09/05/2006 09:54

Cheers everyone, will ask parent if she will give permission for my dp to do pick up or she will have to arrange something else. Can't really cancel the test can i?

I had to turn up at guy's for mine at 8am and didn't get out until gone 12.... the tests are 2 hours apart but you can wait an age for the first test. Once you have had the second test you go away and have something to eat, and wait for the second results. That can take a while too.

I'd see if you can get some help with the pick up - sorry to be negative but the wait can be SO long and nothing you do hurries it up.

I've got one tomorrow but I have been told to eat and drink normally! Been told that it'll take about 2 hours from start to finish but I can remind the midwives if I get forgotten about!! Grin

I had a GTT in my last pregnancy and will have to one again.
I had to stop eating at midnight the night before and not or drink anything until 2 hours before blood taken except a small size bottle of lucozade. I drank this then drove to the hospital 1/2 hr before the 2hrs was up. When I got the midwife told to tell the blood department why I was there so they could make a scheduled slot for me.
Most blood deps deal with this al the time so if you tell why you are there and when the 2hrs is up they should (although not guaranteed) see you at the correct time.

it takes 2 hours they usually take your blood once get you to drink a glucose drink then take your blood again 2 hours later take food with you though because you cant eat untill after those two hours and it can make you feel light headed after having blood taken as well best of luck x

agalch · 10/05/2006 20:18

Well had my GTT this morning. Was fine and only took 2.5 hrs.The glucose drink was ok but bloods were a pain.My poor arms look awful as it took them 2/3 attempts each time to get the bloods.
I had to phone after 7pm for results so all systems go for my homebirth.

Had mine today but mine was a Glucose Challenge test. I could eat and drink normally beforehand. Was given drink of lucozade when arrived (after I had reminded them I had already been sitting there for 1/2 hour!) and told to wait 1 hour. After 1 hour 20 mins, took into room where mw pricked my finger and tested blood sugar level on a diabetic machine. Everything ok and was sent home. Frustrating to be kept that long when I could have done the test at home as my dh is diabetic and has the testing strips and monitor!!!! Angry
